TPMS Bypass woes in a 2008 - a little help?

I've searched the forum, read the topics, thought I did it right, but seems not...

My TPMS light is blinking, either because I have a 2008 and the batteries in the sensors have given up the ghost, or whatever other reason.

I knew you can bypass it, and I figured now it was time to do so, since I always check my pressure manually anyway (even the spare)

I looked up the wiring, and from everything I read, in my 2008, the correct procedure was to open up the panel, then locate the:

PINK w BLACK stripe wire
BLACK w REDDISH stripe wire


and then use a locking type connector.

I did so, as you can see in the attached photo.

I did that today, this morning.

When I first did it, SUCCESS. The light was gone, I ran the car for 30 seconds to make sure, all was good.

Then I went to run errands this evening, and the light is back. I opened up the panel in the store parking lot, checked everything, seems to be connected, nothing popped out etc

Did I do something wrong? Wrong colours? (I know that the colours are different in the pre 06's, but everyone with an 07-09 said it was the colours that I used)

I want to say that it is the "aftermarket" (non-3M) connector, not splicing through the wire casing, but..... why would it have worked the first time I ran the car after doing it?

Any pointers would be appreciated, things like this drive me insane. It should have worked.

I bet you it's just the connector. Those really suck. I just jumped the PIN in the harness.

Gotcha, noted. So just a matter of physically connecting them, rather than relying on a crappy connector.

I did want to confirm, those ARE THE CORRECT coloured wires for my 2008, though, right?

I am supposed to be connecting those to one another.

That's actually the wrong colors too. It's PINK-BLACK (TPMS) and WHITE-BLACK (Ground). You're basically grounding out the TMPS wire.

See, that's where I'm torn. I've searched many threads, and it seems that:

2003-2006(ish) - PINK/BLACK and WHITE/BLACK
2007-2009 - PINK/BLACK and BLACK/RED

I don't even have a white wire with a black stripe, in my loom. Also, the earlier years had the Orange TPMS module, while the later years (like mine), had the Grey module.

That's why I am hoping someone else can pipe in and confirm, because otherwise you and I will be going back and forth on this colour thing! :loco:

You are correct that the 2008-2009 models had a TPMS change (see attached).

These models also do not have the Ground wire (White-Black) at #11. Rather, I believe, they have the Ground wire at #9 and it is solid Brown.

Although I have not confirmed this, I would try to connect your Pink-Black wire at the #5 position (was #6 in 2003-2007) to this Brown #9 Ground wire.

FYI, for those with 2003-2007 here is the TPMS bypass mod in detail as i recently performed it...Toyota 4Runner Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Disable Mod

If you confirm this works, I will add this change in process for 2008-2009 models to my write up documentation. Just let me know.

This is the way I did mine. Super easy and reversible. I know what’s done is done in your circumstance. But could be worth a try as well.

I think youve got the wires correct to jump.

Ive had issues with those splicers before too. Id carefully open it up. Make sure the wire covering have a nick so you can see copper. really wedge the wires down into the metal bridge so they both have good contact with it. you may want to put some electrical tape in too to hold the wires down, then lock it back up

My solution: Pull the TPMS light in the dash and install new regular valve stems. Won't ever have to deal with that system again :lol:

Hahha If removing the dash was ALSO just one single bolt? Absolutely !

Otherwise, I may still try to fiddle with the wiring

This also seems to be my suspicion. The connector doesn't look like it would really cut through the casing well. I am curious if maybe I needed either the "smaller size down" one (this was the 14 to 18ga), or .... assuming I have the correct wires, I just splice in and manually connect them

I am 99.9999 % I have the right coloured wires, but man... it should be working then!

Same. Ask me to change a CV axle or suspension, and I'm ready to go. Ask me to figure out a wiring gremlin, and I'm bringing out the bourbon.

So I too have struggled with this. My 08 limited 2wd doesn’t have the white wire either. I did some research (with the help of chatGPT) and after connecting the ground (brown wire) to the pink wire this (TPMS) system still is active, lights on. Not sure where chatGPT found the information, but it says the model is looking for a high at that pink line rather than a low.

I ended up connecting the 12v wire to it and now it is off. The only problem now is that there seems to be some back feed to the seatbelt system as it is not coming on now. I read about putting a diode inline to keep the 12v from back feeding. Does this make sense to anyone?

I'm seeing other people saying the black with brown stripe. Maybe a few different wires would work?
