To add a data point, I just completed this mod as well.

I used a small SPDT toggle switch (three terminals). I cut the pink/black wire two inches from the tpms ecu connector, and wired the centre terminal to the pink/black going away from the ecu to the dash light. One outer terminal is wired to the pink/black going towards the tpms ecu. The other outer terminal is tapped into the white/black tpms ecu ground. There's a small recessed hole in the hush panel, to the left of the tmps ecu that's an ideal mounting point for the switch, and leaves it accessible without having to remove the hush panel again.

The switch either applies ground to turn off the dash lamp permanently (down), or enables the light to be controlled by the tpms ecu and tpms sensors (up).

The beauty of this is that when you first turn on the ignition, and all the dash lights self-test, if the tpms function is disabled, the tpms light will not illuminate - thus you know the system is in disabled mode.

Bringing this thread back to life.

Is there anyway the original poster can email the install pics to me? I'm still seeing the Red-X's. Or perhaps host them on an independant site? Maybe Photobucket or flickr?

I'm going with a set of aftermarket rims/tires and I want to ditch the TPMS.

Any help is appreciated.
 
Pics are there. I'm using Chrome on Windows 7.

I'm guessing you're on IE8. IE8 has a problem with displaying pictures properly.
 
Resurrecting my own thread.

I want to experiment with a possible TPMS ECU change mod. The early 4th Gen uses a 1st gen TPMS that is rare as a replacement. The later 4th Gen's use a more common and now standard TPMS that is cheaper (on ebay) to replace. I want to try a newer ECU if I can locate one for cheap or from a salvage (not necessarily a T4R.)

Does anyone know the '06 or newer TPMS ECU part number or can point me to a site to search for it?

Or can someone with a '06 or newer truck take a minute to get the part number from their TPMS ECU? This involves removing one screw to drop the passenger trim panel under the glove box (see the earlier instructions in this thread.) The part number will be a 10 digit number with a hypen in the middle (XXXXX-XXXXX) embossed on the face of the ECU.

On my 04 when I initially mount the winters without TPMS the light actually stays out. Go for a drive and after an hour and a half or so the system seems to realise its lost the tires and starts blinking. Get home, park near where the summers with the TPMS are stored and it finds them again and stops flashing. Further into winter the light comes on constant because it now senses the spare has low pressure as things get colder - I usually get the spare pumped up to 38+psi before the winter to avoid the issue and never see the light all winter apart from longer trips as a result. (For those wondering, the system does work by the way - it spotted a slow leak that I had plugged a year or so ago)

Fast forward to my wife's 2010 Corolla and the light on that comes on the second the summers are off, even when they are in the trunk!

The system on the 04 has some advantages imho.
 
Did this mod today. Worked great..

TPMS light came on 2 weeks ago when I went to a Hospital. I looked in the owner's manual and it state's FCC signals could set off TPMS light. So I went home lowered and then raised tire pressure light went out.

Today I drove past same Hospital and light started to flash..Went home and lowered and raised pressure and light still flashed..

So I decided to do this mod. I don't know if the batteries are going bad or if Hospital signal actually set of light, But now I don't have to worry about it any more.

I'M big on keeping car clean and well maintained so I check the tire pressure often any way..

I took my 4runner 4x4ing today and that pesky light came on. Took me like 10 min to fix. great writeup op!

I bought a 2004 4runner 2 weeks ago and had the spare stolen... I noticed it when the TPMS warning light was flashing, checked the tires and they all seemed fine, went to check the spare and it was gone. I check my pressure regularly, so don't need this system and hard wired in the bypass.

I plan on rebuilding the spare hoist with a new cable, getting steel rim on ebay from an FJ cruiser (less attractive to steal), and using an old tire when I get mine replaced. No need for a $80 TPMS sensor, so I think the total cost will be around 100 bucks, rather than the 500-1k I've seen people pay at the dealership to get the spare replaced. I plan on putting a metal plate inside the spare so they can't get wire cutters in, and chaining it to the frame with a krypto lock.
 
Not trying to be an @ss but why do people do this mod? I air down often for trail runs, have 285's, my spare mounted on my bumper and the TPMS works like it's supposed to. I can see it as an alternative to replacing a bad sensor but is there another reason?
