Tracking down a rattle brought me to this

Found out the rattles were loose shocks on rear. Not really sure how that happened, but they managed to come loose. I also decided to take a look at the fluids. The 4runner felt a little off today. Starting getting a really hard shift into 2nd, and all picked up on some rattles. I noticed I had no coolant in the reservoir, and I just got finished driving. Checked the transmission fluid, and it was way above the hot mark and looked a little off. Popped to radiator cap to find this. Looks like I'm in the market for a new Koyo A1998 radiator, B&M 70268 cooler, and a nifty gauge to top it off. A little pissed, but it could have been worse.

I will say that I had no smoke, no signs of over heating, and didn't drive any different. Everything literally changed within the last 5 miles from home.

Why did you delete your other thread? I had a long reply typed out, hit send, and it disappeared with your thread.

I'm not typing all that again, so I'll just say flush the transmission ASAP.

Should I go back out tonight and drain it, or can it wait until tomorrow?

It may already be too late to save the transmission and torque convertor. I'd drain it right now, and have it towed to a trans. shop and thoroughly flushed tomorrow.

This got got back from a 4 hour trip over the weekend and had issues with it. Pretty sure this just happened, but I could be wrong. The transmission is draining right now. Pulled the dipstick out, removed the plug, and it's definitely pink milkshake. I going to flush everything, put in a new radiator, and call it good. If the transmission is gone we'll find out.

Might want to get a b&m external cooler to prevent this from ever happening again. I'm so glad I did mine last weekend.

Well, good luck.

Just know that approx. half of your ATF is in the torque convertor, and it won't come out by simply draining the pan. To get that fluid out, it has to be flushed out. Not to mention that the ATF/coolant mix is now everywhere in the transmission.

If it were me, I'd flush it or have it flushed with a machine designed for the job.

You can try the home flushing method, but you'll probably use far more fluid than a flushing machine would use, to get the same result.

Holy crap, these milkshake threads are scaring me enough to get around to installing an external cooler sooner. Good luck with your transmission. Hopefully you'll be one of the lucky few to survive it cheaply.

I'm very sorry to see this! Have had a Denso radiator on order for a week now, am replacing it soon - can I ask how many miles on your radiator?

Best wishes, hope you get it recovered without too much hassle or cash! :gun6:

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit... I have a visceral reaction to the Pink Milkshake photos. Hopefully you caught yours in time! Good luck.

How many miles on 4runner. I changed my radiator as preventive maintenance with oem from camelbak to avoid pink milkshake.

117k on it. I've been meaning to add a cooler for some time now, and that just never happened.

I was up all last night pissed as hell about this. Beating myself up for not installing a transmission cooler like I've been talking about doing. The more I starter thinking about it, the more pissed off I got. This morning that's all changed though. What's do is done, and things could have been worse.

Maybe this is karma coming back on me. I just traded in my truck that had a transmission that was going out on it, and then this happens out of no where.

Bypassing the brand new radiator will do nothing to prevent this issue from reoccurring. The problem is caused by age and wear. Simply replace the radiator and run a B&M cooler inline and enjoy your extra cooling.

I do agree though, flush out your transmission ASAP. The coolant will destroy the clutch material in the transmission. Just buy the store brand ATF and go to town.

Bypassing any radiator, old or new will completely eliminate the possibility of coolant and ATF mixing. I get your point about it being new and not as likely to happen for another 117k miles, but bypassing with a sufficient cooler will rid his truck of this problem from happening again indefinitely.

I'm trying to figure out how to do this on my own. I know how to do, on a system that isn't f'ed like mine currently is.

I understand that as well and fully agree with you. It just seems as though many on the forum believe that this issue to be caused by a design flaw rather than age.
