Trade in value diss

I contacted one of the largest Toyota dealers in the country here in Denver about trading my 2014 Sr5 Premium with 11,000 miles for a 2015 Limited. They said $31,000 was the absolute most they could give me. So much for that idea. I'll get one in a couple years when my warranty runs out. Ive already expressed my displeasure here with the binding on tight turns in 4 wheel drive. My bad completely for not doing my research before buying. No fault of this awesome truck which I otherwise love.

So... is there a question you have? Not sure what you paid for it new but $31,000 trade in is more than fair. Yes, 4runners hold their resale extremely well. But you also have to keep in mind that several thousand dollars worth of value depreciate as soon as you drive it off the lot; let alone the trade in value.

well for my 2014 LE bare bones, trade in @ 15k miles is at 31.5k at Edmunds.

they are giving more than enough for your sr5.

Um that's a hell of a deal for trade in value. Friends of ours just bought a 2015 Sr5 premium for $32k brand new, so I'm guessing you overpaid when you bought it.

Dealer just gave me $37,000 for a 13' Limited with 11,000+ miles, yea I had money into it, but not what they thought I did, could not be happier. Now they are asking 40k for it LOL.

I think before you "diss" the trade in value of your Toyota you should do your homework. Run the numbers on a comparable Crysler, GM, Ford, Nissan, and Honda SUV for the same year, and then post the results here. Then tell us how bad your trade in value is. I'm not going to check myself, but I'm willing to bet that none of them will come close to what that dealer is offering you.....yet I'll bet the initial vehicle price was close to the 4Runner.

Anyone knows that ANY new car depreciates the most in the first year, but your Toyota 4Runner will hold it's value better than anything I know of in it's market space. Did you honestly expect to get near-new value on it when trading in during the first year? Honestly, if you can't handle the first year depreciation, then you should buy used. I agree with you that it's your bad for not doing your homework when buying, but I'll add that it's also your bad for dissing the trade-in value of a first year vehicle without comparing it to the market competition. If you had, you'd probably find that your 4Runner is already valued higher than it's competitors.

I hope you guys understand that trade in value means absolutely nothing. It all depends on the delta you end up paying. They could give you 40k for your trade and still rip you off really bad. Car dealers generally make money no matter how great you think your deal is. The more factors in the equation (trade, finance, extended warranty, dealer options, pre-paid service...) the more profit they make. You are almost always better off without a trade.

You might think I am crazy, as some of my friends/family have said, but over the years (I used to have one) there is nothing I have regretted more selling, than a OBS (94-97) F350 7.3 Powerstroke Crew Cab 4WD. I have been hunting and finding a good clean one is like a needle in a haystack these days. I just picked one up 3 weeks ago and have already had it striped/painted, suspension work, new seals all around, wheels/tires, and putting 2011 SuperDuty Harley leather seats front/back, much much more, pretty much a restore. Engine has 260,000 on it, but these are f**king almost bulletproof, but when she ever goes I already have plans for a Swamps 7.3 performance engine.

I will miss my 5th gen 4R, it was nice, but I do like the $$$ (they bought it cash out). I have many other vehicles to drive as well, but this thing puts a HUGE grin on my face, love me a loud rod knok-er :biggrin2: late model SuperDuty's just don't do it for me :yawn:

IMO those years looked the best too before that redesign. Nice trucks. I nearly bought one in '98 when I still had a reason to pull a piece of equipment around.

Really there are not a lot of vehicles that "do it for me" anymore. In 36 years of driving I have went really really fast on both two and four wheels, modded enough vehicles to go off road that I could fill a McDonalds parking lot with and did pretty much of everything in between.
Life's too short to not enjoy a vehicle. Go for it! To the OP:

Always negotiate the difference. It does not matter what the new vehicle costs nor does it matter what they give you for your trade. Find a number you like that is the difference between the two and get there. You will save a lot of pain and angst.

I just got $31k for my 2012 limited 4x4. Im pretty satisfied. 4runner seems to hold the value pretty high. Here in the midwest, these 4R sells like hotcakes. Hard to find when i was looking for one and when i do find one, theres a crowd of people looking at it.

IMO you should keep your T4R its a great truck and no a part time 4x4 isn't the best for a lightly snow covered road but it is great for extremely deep snow/sand or mud etc. if you don't enjoy any sort of off roading it might not be the platform for you. Even with stock tires mine seems great in the slippery stuff in 2wd. Get some blizzack tires and forget it has 4x4.

Don't buy a subaru, in the past they were great but I have seen many many serious issues with new models.

I use to have one also (regular cab); I do not think there has ever been a better truck/engine combo produced. I tried a 2005 superduty, did not like it at all, got rid of it less than a year after I got it.

I sold mine years ago and I regret it still, but I cannot find any real reason to get another one, maybe if I had money for some toys I would.

There is no way I am selling my SR5, and who the hell wants to drive a unibody. For the right price I would trade for a AWD Limited but thats not going to happen. I have owned sticky snow tires and they wear out in 20,000 miles or less. Yesterday in the snow I was making a hard turn into a McDonalds drive through and got the binding. Dont hate on that too, I was in need of a McGriddle as a reward for driving my daughter to work since shes afraid to drive in the snow since she totaled my Montero. Its all good I really didnt need to be in 4wd anyway.

Just keep it anther year. It will still be worth 30k. Then you can come back and say how happy you are with you trade in. It's hard to trade the first year. They are worth almost the same the second year.
