Traded a 2011 4-Runner Trail Edition in for...

It was a short but sweet experience owning the Toyota. I really loved it.
On Cape Cod, the 4R employed awesome performance on the beach and an overall versatile aspect not found in a lot of SUV's offered today. Now that I am back at school, and find myself using my SUV more for various reasons(I have a 328i sedan that has been in the garage a lot this Fall) I found the 4-Runner to be a completely different car in the city/urban areas. In this environment, the 4R has handled poorly, the brakes were very mushy and the car lacked the assertive 'edge' that I have experienced from my past cars. Driving in traffic was hell- merging, sudden braking, uncommunicative steering... I was not confident driving the car. We also experienced a lot of flood rains earlier last month and the car lost traction pretty bad when I was going around a rotary- part time four wheel drive I guess. My family is very car orientated. My dad loves cars, and so does my mom. I'm a BMW guy, My dad is a Benz guy and my mom is all about Saabs. My dad and I bought the 4R on the last day of the month, and got a great deal. We were very excited for the new addition to the car fam! My dad only drove the 4R once but was unimpressed with the braking/handling as well. He did say on the highway it was very comfortable! which I agree. The gas mileage was also impressive given the size and weight of the car. I never found the car underpowered... it was not exciting but definitely had pick-up. Trading the 4R in for the X5, we lost an overall $740.00 less than what we paid for it- and I put on about 6,800 miles- so the resale on these cars are incredible. While I was not seeking the 4R to be sporty, performance orientated, or luxurious- I did, however, expect it to be a secure car. While i'm sure many of you feel that your 4R is secure, I find this a subjective manner- and decided to look for other options. Now that I have had the X5 for about two weeks- I feel as if it was the right decision. I just love the european engineering of BMW's and the overall dynamic feeling they provide. The heavy doors, Steering feel and braking are all 100x better than the 4R's. My car is also equipped with the 'Adaptive Drive' option- which virtually eliminated body roll. The X5 has 25k miles, with extended maintenance. I've never had any substantial problems with BMW's and this cars service history/dealer appointments are an A+. It was owned by a Doctor in Boston. While they are completely different cars, I am glad that I got to experience the 4R. My mom had an FJ40 when I was about 6 years old as our beach car, and I used to do my homework in it every night. I loved it. I got kind of attached to the 4R as it had little things that reminded me of our old LC. However, practicality issues overruled my decision to keep the car. I have found this website very informative and full of enthusiastic owners. I will still stop by to see what everyone is doing with their 4R's! I hope the next owner of my trail edition uses it for what it was made for and enjoys every minute of it!

To anyone buying a trail edition or not sure which model, consider;
-The limited- Full time 4WD along with a more stiff suspension should negate some of the characters I disliked in my car.
-The brakes never get more firm. Our sales guy told us they would break in and feel more solid. They never did.
-Sounds system is a joke. Easy upgrade, however.
-Steering is very artificial. I found the car very boring to drive sometimes.
-The gas mileage is very good on these cars.
-Seat comfort is A+ as well!

Overall, I am happy with my decision to get rid of the 4R. The X5 is truly a dream. The grumble of the exhaust, panoramic sunroof, great audio system, and overall quality all lead up to a very nice driving experience. I miss the 4R, though... and how unique it was. It was definitely a special car.

And here is Mr. X5!

Enjoy yourselves and thanks for reading!:hatsoff:

X5's are pretty sweet, but you honestly couldn't find another SUV/CUV more opposite the 4runner. It sounds like the X5 is a much better fit for your needs.

Good luck!

heh.. x5s are awesome. I really like them.. But owning one is.. well, it is a brave thing.
Seeing all these Bimmers in the shops I work with is quite unsettling, and once warranty is out, you're in for the world of pillage and pain.

BMW does make cars that are fun, though. I think i may end up leasing one eventually.. maybe a 3.. for weekend fun.
but never will I own them.

Like KC said, X5 is an absolute opposite to 4r.

good luck.

I also understand it's opposite to the 4R, which I stated... "While they are completely different cars, I am glad that I got to experience the 4R."

We all know which of the two cars are most likely to be most reliable, but I have fait in BMW products. Many of my friends, and some family members are devoted to the brand and have had limited issues. That being said, it truly does vary from engines, options, etc. and how the car is treated. Example; I was going to get a 335, but avoided since the notorious High Pressure Fuel Pump problems and wanted to get the last inline-6 offered in a 3 (the new base engine is a twin-turbo 4). My dad has a 2007 ML500 we bought new. It just turned 99,000 miles- no problems- ever. Tires, oil and brakes. Same applies to his '06 S-class AMG.... One automaker I am vary wary with about trust is VW and Audi. I had a Touareg v8 and it was the most unreliable car ever. It was the perfect package but I had no trust in the car. My mom had an A8 in 2006- same thing. Those cars are like a bad dessert. They look delicious, but lack taste.

You should definitely consider leasing a 3! They are a kick... so much character and are very driver orientated. There will be some aggressive lease deals this month and next as the new model just debuted and they are now taking orders for them.

Why tell a story of how much you didn't like the TE 4R and sold it on a forum that people go to that love them? It's like wiping before you poop, it just doesn't make any sense.

Why not thoroughly read my review before you start claiming that I am bashing the car to 4R owners? I clearly stated many positives about the car; such as good gas mileage, seat comfort, residual value, highway comfort, and great performance on the beach. It is not my intent to bash what people own. I also included how I appreciated this forum for the peoples enthusiasm towards 4R's and how informative it was. My intent of the review was to A. Say goodbye as a 4R owner to the thread and B.inform potential buyers why my trail edition did not suit to my likings - and to consider what all the different trims have to offer. I think the 4runner is a great car.

I hear ya, just seems unnecessary. Best of luck man. :violin:

+1 :iagree:

a list of all expensive cars that your family have/had don't help either. C'mon, talking about AMG, A8, ML500, X5 on a 4runner forum? really? :gun4:

Thanks.

Thanks for sharing, I always enjoy exit interviews. Good luck with the B, they are a nice rig also, just different. :-)

In replying to a concern about reliability from a response to my original post? I was not ostentatiously listing cars off of my thumb that my family owns. This is a forum. A forum for car owners - who are most likely enthusiasts and can discuss information. I'm actually Sorry if you found this offensive by all means. I feel that I have been pretty respectful towards 4R's and their owners- and am a car fanatic- I live and breathe cars.

Thank you! I am very entertained - typing a term paper all afternoon, t4r.org is eliminating the boredom. Thanks for the good luck- happy motoring :driving:

I thought your post and opinions were well worded and a good read for sure. Thanks for sharing!

Good luck with the new ride! Don't let people get you down for sharing some honest, fair, and good thoughts.

I know where the OP is coming from as well. My wife drives a Lexus IS350 and had a BMW 328 prior. When I drive her car now and then, I do miss the handling and "feel" those cars provide on road in comparison to my 4R. I also had the Trail edition and recently traded up for a newer limited, so with XREAS the road handling is much better...did your trail have KDSS?

Either way, enjoy your X5! Thanks for being honest too.

The 4Runner was just a base model trail edition - so nothing special suspension/audio wise. Congrats on the limited! Thanks for the wishes.

Yeah. Feel free to stop by and do a little slummin' with the common folk from time to time.

:sleepy: a little dramatic, bud.

We had the same trail edition then. Perhaps the trail with KDSS or the LTD may have been better suited for you(me too) but still not as sporty as your X5:)

A lot of people here I think feel upset or like they have to protect their beloved 4runner because of one person not enjoying it, and getting something else. There's no reason people should be bashing you. I hope you enjoy your new X5, and hope it works out for you. May their be many enjoyable miles ahead of you with your new suv!
