Traded a 2011 4-Runner Trail Edition in for...

no need to be getting all defensive. I pointed out the fact that you danced around.. cost of ownership and low reliability. tis all.

the way I see it, larger BMW are just not cost effective.. I mean, really, I ran against and beat a more than a couple m3s in my old car. My set up was worth way less than what those owners paid for theirs, and I had less problems with mine.

The cost of their normal brakes got me a 6pt BBK..etc. Cost of motors/trans... i'm not even going there.

I love the way they look, but owning one, not having a bank in Cayman islands makes no sense to me.

I'm not getting defensive. You were putting words in my mouth. I never said BMW's were "really reliable". They are expensive to maintain.....any luxury car is, no matter who makes it. Look at the Land Cruiser....expensive AND expensive to maintain. If anyone buys a BMW (even a cheap used one) and gets angry when they have to pay more for parts/ maintenance, they're a fool.

As far as the beating M3's, etc.....If I was racing, a M3 would not be my first choice. You could build a Miata that would beat M3's all day at the track (after all, an M3 is a hopped-up 3,500lb sedan, not a true sportscar). But, for a do-it-all car, BMW's (especially M cars) are pretty hard to beat. Now we're getting off the topic, but I feel like you're stating obvious things: BMW's are expensive/ expensive to to work on, BMW's are not as reliable as Toyota, BMW's are not the fastest cars on the planet..... like it's some kind of profound statement.

talk about putting words in someone's mouth...
ok, for you specifically, I will elaborate: dollar to performance ratio is not good enough in BMW; for me that is.

I don't think I've ever raced a sedan m3.. all of them were coupes, IIRC.
Oh yeah, the car I used was my DD, and was a "luxury" coupe as well.

As stated on a comment on the first page of the thread - we all know which is more reliable of the two cars. On another note, if you've never personally owned a German car for an extended amount of time- why comment on how bad they are? It's like preaching to people about how reliable a car is because its recommended by consumer reports. I know that there is a chance a couple of things wil come up- but I bit the bullet. I have a warranty, another car, and time to run it to the dealer if something needs to be fixed. I also have great relationships with two BMW dealers. There are some people who dislike German cars- but there are some people who will only own German cars. It's all comes down to personal opinion and experience. I just wanted to share with the forum my thoughts on the 4R along with what I bought and why. Most of you have been nice- the rest have been pretty annoying. I'm only 22, and I have exhibited more professionalism and polite-ness to some people probably at least twice my age. At this point, no more explaining myself. I've said enough, if not too much in terms of responding to some of these mundane comments regarding personal things. Like I've said before, the 4R was great- not for me. I've written a polite review about that and there was zero 'hating' on the car or it's owners. It's the weekend- I have work, photography class and fun with friends... Along with some driving to do:D. See you guys later- thanks for (some of) the congrats. Good luck-

A "sedan" is a passenger car, two or four doors....doesn't matter. Most coupes have the same chassis, wheelbase, and approximate weight as their four door counterparts. It sounds like you were street racing? I understand BMWs aren't cost effective. Does anyone walk into a BMW dealership looking for a cost-effective car???

apparently i cant 'like' your post, but +1,

people by bimmers for many reasons, but cost effectiveness isn't one of them. Then again, I call BS that anyone buys a 4runner for cost effectiveness. If this was a civic forum I might not feel the same :)

As a lease they are quite cost effective. All scheduled and unscheduled service, fluids, wipers, etc are all covered under the warranty which is longer than typical leases.

If you're looking for a sporty car to abuse for a couple years there is nothing better. Drive the **** out of it and return it. It's BMW's problem then. Been there, done that.

You don't buy new BMW's - ever.

Why the hate on street racing? Pending traffic....

I do not condone street racing.. only thing that is worth than that is DUI, imho.

please, don't judge me by your own actions..:bat:

I understand, some people get "toys" to play with them, some to flaunt them... I had mine to play with...

So, where did you "run" against M3's?

Why the hate on street racing? Pending traffic....

It's dangerous, and shows little about the all-around capabilities of the car, or the driver. You can NEVER completely predict traffic or road surfaces. There are plenty of places to go and safely race away from public streets.

Um. well, if it is not a street racing, I think common sense would say it would be tracks.. no? (I know, what an alien concept!!!)

OK, seriously. I'm glad you're not street racing. I'm sorry you can't appreciate the good things about German cars however expensive and quirky they may be. Otherwise, let's just agree to disagree because this is getting ridiculous and we really should be talking about how awesome our 4runners are.

This is funny... usually if people can afford bimmer, they can afford maintenance, usually. If I have too much money I would buy BMW X5 for my wife as well, that way my 4everunner always available for me)))) instead of driving frontier...
I have few friends who owned/s x5 with over 100k no problems at all, but at same time my mom had a rav4 with 13xxxx miles and transmission dead. You just never know!
Good luck with bimmer!

What's a 4everunner? LOL, I might be gullible.. But is that some special edition model?

Had to chime in here...

I think the OP is being a little sensitive, but I can understand where he's coming from.

If you're still reading this OP, it seems you were a little condescending especially after criticizing the 4Runner. Even though that wasn't your intention, it did come across that way. Don't get all butt hurt though...you're on a public forum...grow a little thicker skin and post away. Anyway, your money, your prerogative.

Also, I'm pretty sure most people on this forum could afford your X5 and all the other "great" Teutonic cars you mentioned your family and you have had, but chose the 4Runner for their own reasons.

To each their own.

BTW, I love my 4Runner to death! For my intentions and purposes, it serves me perfectly.

Absolutely one "should" be able. My point is why?

Because anyone who doesn't want to read about other cars can simply look at other posts and not repeatedly bother people who don't mind the occasional diversion from 4Runner talk when talking with other 4Runner enthusiasts/owners.

If you look back, you'll find that the original post did contain pertinent 4Runner discussion, particularly why he chose the 4Runner and also why, in a different situation, he chose the X5.

Sounds like another case of someone who wanted a AWD wagon, but bought a 4WD SUV....

Its too bad you didnt' opt for KDSS. I for one, was amazed at how the 4runner handled the first time i drove it. The suspension is quite soft so it feels as though it is going to lean a lot when cornering, but with KDSS it has little lean and is a very controlled ride.

I would also like to point out that comparing the reliability of a 3-series and an X5 is really apples to oranges. The 3 series is a LONG TIME staple of BMW and they have spent decades refining it. The X5 is much newer, with newer engine and chassis designs.
Not saying that the X5 WON'T be reliable, I really dont know, but I do know that assuming that since the 3 series is reliable the X5 will be too is short sighted.

If you are fine with congratulating someone on buying a BMW on a 4Runner forum that is your prerogative I suppose.
