It was always intended to be a small percentage of overall production. I can't find the thread here, but when I first joined I read that is was only going to be 13% of the 2010 total.
Can't see what would have moved them away from that plan, even if I personally think the Trail should be the base model.

I had issues searching for mine as well. I found that most dealers didn't list them as Trail Editions in their systems.
Try searching the dealer's website and price matching with standard TE configurations; most areas have standard configurations.
In SoCal they really only had two styles -- <1> base TEs with floor mats or <2> KDDS and Navigation with floor mats. As long as the dealer hasn't slapped on a bunch of crap you might be able to locate a few potential hidden leads. Then try calling them directly or you might luck out and find pictures posted online. It's not an exact science but I used it to find about 3-4 additional TEs in SoCal.
It's also very possible that they've ran out. I bought mine a few months ago. I had originally wanted to wait until the summer but I decided to buy early b/c they were already in short supply and I knew it was only going to get worse.
Personally, I'd rather them keep the supply low now that I have one. It should boost the resale value further down the line.

I think Toyota keeps the supply low so they can keep their prices very high. Remember the old days when GM and Ford would not slow production when sales were low because their union contracts meant they had to pay the workers if they worked or not. They just kept overbuilding and then had to offer massive rebates to move the cars. I guess that is why they had to declare bankruptcy. Jeep sells about twice as many Grand Cherokees as Toyota sells 4runners and I would bet that you will see high rebates on those also once the newness of the new model wears off.
