Trail Edition is now officially the TRD Off Road

We are in a day and age that people believe they can buy into experience and they do believe. For an amount of money you can dress the part. That is what Toyota is stroking on and it is obviously working really well for them.

I see it all the time, head up to the mountain, and there is some gaper (i.e. shitty skier/boarder/rider) sporting $2000-5000 worth of gear that can hardly ride. Why? Looks great in the bar I guess

I'm surprised people are getting so wrapped around the axle over no TRD branded parts on the TRDOR. The TRDOR Tacoma and Tundra don't have TRD branded parts on them. You basically get different suspension tune (not TRD branded), a locker (taco only), crawl/multi terrain (taco only), and trim specific wheels. The name is just a name to let you know that this is the one you want if you want the off-road goodies. If you want knobbier tires and remote reservoir suspension, jump to the Pro.

As to the dead horse about why anyone would get a Pro, check out the thread where the guy tore his axle up trying to diagnose a noise in an aftermarket suspension. Some people just don't want to deal with that. I certainly don't want to spend my time diagnosing problems when I just spent 68hrs at work last week with a decent portion of that diagnosing robot faults.

I keep reading how the 'off-road' is designed for off-road driving. But then i keep reading that the 4Rnnr is designed as an off road vehicle from the jump...so...

I've always been confused with the Tacoma and Tundra lines because there are different TRD models. Boneheaded move by Toyota, I think.

Remember WHY Toyota is in business. To make money, not to placate a small group of enthusiasts. I think changing the name will be brilliant from a business standpoint.

To go along with [MENTION=99702]jrandom[/MENTION]'s post above: The truth is most people don't want to actually DO the cool stuff out in the woods on the trails but they want to THINK they COULD and they want to LOOK THE PART! TRD parts like wheels, brakes and the name itself along with the words "off road" just help those people dream. Simple fact. The truth is it's HARD to do the cool stuff. It's HARD to have an epic trip. It's HARD to have to pedal up a 2K ascent so you can have a great downhill run. It's HARD to pack your 4Runner for a long weekend, get out there in the pouring rain, get stuck, get wet, have warm beer and cold food. It's EASY to LOOK like you do that though! The truth is taking the 4Runner off road, riding hard on a mountain bike, hiking up through powder just to have a run nobody else has had that day, climbing that face to get a view very few others ever get.... it's hard.

I see it all the time in the mountain biking world and I'm sure [MENTION=48413]Quentin[/MENTION] sees it too. You get to a trail head and see the killer $8K bikes with the guys dressed like they are either riding in the Tour or competing in the world downhill championships lol. Then they take the two mile green trails, come back and go home to talk about their epic ride. Now don't get me wrong... they beat the guys who sit home on the couch right? You see the exact same thing here in this forum. A guy drops $10K on an Icon stage eleventytwelve and tires and another $10K on wheels, rack, skids, dual battery setup, fridge, roof top tent and awning and uses the 4Runner to go to the mall. Same deal.

So it's going to be the Off Road instead of the Trail. Big deal. Kudos to Toyota for having a smart marketing team.

not that you were addressing me personally, but my head-scratching is solely contained to the countless times a Pro is immediately fitted with said aftermarket suspension and knobbier tires.

@ Flingwinger . You're right but i was hell bent to try. Wilson Toyota tried to help as much as possible but in the end i needed an American friend who i could trust. All for not.
Best thing to happen though. Love the trail.

Pretty stoked for ya man. Well worth the wait. You're gonna love the ICON lift. Just a wicked combo working with the KDSS. Rides amazing. No jarring, great cushioning. Had a blast last week taking it up the backside of Mt.Cheam.
What stage did you get? Couple things I've experienced which might help.
-feel free to max out the front coil adjuster. Doesn't ride any rougher and gets rid of the "raked" look with the higher back coils. (Unless of course you want that)
-depending on your rubber (i got 285/70 18R) there's some minor cutting of the front wells and mudflaps to get rid of the rub. NothIng a fresh olfa blade can't cure.
-if ya got the extended reservoirs i ran my rears like in the pic i'll send. Then wrapped the hoses in hard hydraulic hose protection just incase. Tested and had no rub on extreme oscillation.
-keep up on cleaning the Aluminum. As im sure you know living where we live.☺☺ Enjoy!

I can even take this one-step further... since I am this guy (minus 8K bike & Tour outfits). I fully make/made the decisions I have knowing dang well it’s all over-kill. But just KNOWING (as [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] stated above) that my truck can handle 99.5% of the shiote life can throw at it is 1) piece-of-mind... and 2) keeps my imagination going in a life filled with career goals, young kids, lots of concrete & traffic (all with little free-time).

I didn’t set out with my first 4Runner to be a “poser”... I went to buy an FJ, listened to my wife who’s always loved 4Runners, jumped in one while waiting on the sales rep, and fell in love instantly. Since that time, I have moved further than I ever imagined in my career, started a family, and have become very busy. This life isn’t for everyone, I get that. But I’m very happy to have the job I do, and feel blessed to have come this far with no regrets.... BUT - My 4Runner and this forum always keep me thinking... always wondering. And as my kids get more “of-age”, I find the “pull” of piling into the Runner, taking a road trip to AR or CO, and getting my kids outdoors fishing and hiking, etc., is getting stronger and stronger. AND I LOVE IT. Screw the iPads, the splash-pads, the video games, the expensive hobbies, and just get outdoors to enjoy nature and some quiet-time with the family.

If that is what the 4Runner is capable of doing for me, I’m grateful for it. And I will always enjoy reading what the members of this forum are able to do in their lives, with their Runners. Even if I never really take mine to do much of any of it... it’ll keep me motivated to try as long as I own one.

typically, when Engineering thinks something outside its purview is a good idea, it tends to get Marketing kinda weirded out.

yeah, but then again you bought a TEP w/KDSS for gobs less than a Pro, added Bilsteins and a little lift, an aluminum front skid, and some nice, lightweight 8" wheels, so no one was ever throwing shade your way anyhow :wink2:

Toyota is just capitalizing on the TRD brand. Here in Calif you get a $10k markup on a TRD Pro, now they'll be able to ask $5k over sticker for a TRD Offroad. What's next Toyota, "disco stripes" like you had on the LC's 4Runners and pickups in the early 80's?

I've been looking for a TE Premium, might have to fly to Vegas or Tucson to buy one. Toyota is just giving the people what they want (title of a great Kinks album BTW).

Are they going to sell a TRD OffRoad with street tires? My Trail came packaged with some terrible stock tires.

If I was buying a 2017 Off Road (Trail) the first thing I would do is pry that badging off the side of the truck. Way to lame to keep on the car. The best thing about the Trail appearance is the subtlety of the silver bumper accents and no need for extra badging.

Yep. That's exactly right. I am glad I bought my trail when I did. If I were ever in the market for a Badged 4Runner, I'd buy it in another state.

I was at the Summit event, and there was a lot of talk about Toyota leaking the new 4R.... and we got this. Kind of a bummer.
