Trail Edition is now officially the TRD Off Road

Well unless something changes I will be in a 2017 TRD Off Road sooner than later.

I've been casually searching for a Trail Premium with KDSS in the Southeast for the last couple months but have not been able to get any dealer to bite. The latest dealer news is that there is only 1 SW with KDSS left in the southeast so no incentive to budge. MSRP $43k and OTD at $47k. I can get a TRD Pro at my local dealer for that price today. Looks like I will either have to change up my color palette or wait for the TRD Off Road. I do not care for the badging on the C pillar. That will be removed ASAP if I do end up with one.

Off topic: I know some are waiting for the complete redesign but I am afraid that will come with the new powertrain as well. I feel the 3rd gen Tacoma is underwhelming and want to get one of the last of the 4.0's new while I still can.

Have you inquired about ordering one that you want or will they not do this for you? I live in the SE and my dealer will order at any time when I am ready but if I am lot browsing hoping one drops...well that will never happen here. Southeast dealerships rarely allocate Trail Premiums for lot stock. You will however find a sh** ton of SR5's and Limited's. The one I drove last weekend just happened to be there because the owner ordered it then jumped into a Limited before it arrived.

I think you can until fall. I believe order banks open for '17 in December? Where abouts are you located in AL?

The easiest way to do this with imgur is to just put an "h" at the end of the file name, or an "l" if you need a bit smaller than h.

Name change is pretty valueless but I get it.

IMO the TRD Pro undermined the Trail Edition for a lot of buyers.

Used to be if you wanted the most capable Runner you just paid a little more and got the Trail edition. Now the difficult-to-acquire, much more expensive TRD Pro comes in as the most capable model and makes the Trail look more like a marginal trim package. Suddenly owning the former top-dog 4Runner was somehow a disappointment. Might as well buy the SR5. Calling the Trail a TRD makes it seem special again and gives the dealers a lot more "special" inventory to move.

It's all a bunch of bullshit but that's how psychology works.

I got my Trail in silver for a few reasons.

1.) The ghastly silver trim would just blend right in
2.) The black trim would stick out more
3.) Silver is so easy to keep clean

But mainly so the silver trim would blend in, and I wouldn't have to plasti-dip it, or pay an exorbitant amount of money to swap out a couple plastic trim pieces haha.

Not sure I agree here. I feel like the Pro is good for guys who might prefer to not tinker with things and want to stay under warranty. The TE and SR5 seem like great choices as the things they don't have from the Pro is what many would replace anyway.

I think the TRD Off Road is a cool sticker package. I had three Tundras and one Tacoma, all TRD, all stickers and a shift knob (skid plates). It was all the dealer had here to jack up the price a bit for very little cost to them. Seems this is the same situation. Might even see the Pro go up in cost because of this.

My only complain is the dang ignition. Used to tapping the key, not holding it to start. I'll get over it. Maybe the new TRD will have this. :Cry: You want to talk about a slew of missing options? Check out a Tundra some time and compare to a 4R.

There will no longer be Trail or TP versions in 2017 - TRD Off Road and TRD Premium

The latest Toyota rumor has it that there will no longer be Trail or Trail Premium models offered in 2017, and instead, Toyota will follow suit with their Tacoma versioning with TRD Off Road and TRD Premium versions. It seems the new 4Runner off road lineup will be: TRD Pro (base), TRD Off Road (Mid Range) and TRD Off Road Premium.

Toyota first offered the Trail Edition on the 5th Gen in 2009. It seems 2016 will be its last year running, a brief 7 year stint in the overall 4Runner lifespan.

Personally, as a 2016 Trail Premium owner, I welcome the change and the rarity it will place on the Trail models. It might even have a positive impact on the resale value. I'm also a fan of the Trail Edition and Trail Edition Premium stealth looks - no badging, no emblems, no headrest embroidery or floor mat stitching calling out what it is. It's subtle and clean.

On the other hand, with an expanding TRD line up, the rarity and exclusivity of the TRD badge may eventually find itself somewhat diminished and commoditized.

What are your thoughts on this change, if indeed it turns out true? What do you Trail owners think and what about all you TRD owners?
