Trail Edition is now officially the TRD Off Road

The latest Toyota rumor has it that there will no longer be Trail or Trail Premium models offered in 2017, and instead, Toyota will follow suit with their Tacoma versioning with TRD Off Road and TRD Premium versions. It seems the new 4Runner off road lineup will be: TRD Pro (base), TRD Off Road (Mid Range) and TRD Off Road Premium.

Toyota first offered the Trail Edition on the 5th Gen in 2009. It seems 2016 will be its last year running, a brief 7 year stint in the overall 4Runner lifespan.

Personally, as a 2016 Trail Premium owner, I welcome the change and the rarity it will place on the Trail models. It might even have a positive impact on the resale value. I'm also a fan of the Trail Edition and Trail Edition Premium stealth looks - no badging, no emblems, no headrest embroidery or floor mat stitching calling out what it is. It's subtle and clean.

On the other hand, with an expanding TRD line up, the rarity and exclusivity of the TRD badge may eventually find itself somewhat diminished and commoditized.

What are your thoughts on this change, if indeed it turns out true? What do you Trail owners think and what about all you TRD owners?

Barely. All you get is an extra 1" of lift with the TRDP. Easy as pie to make a TEP do what a TRDP can. All the TRDP is really is Trim and color options minus a sunroof.

If you are looking at a completely stock vehicle, then probably.

On the other hand, you could take the money saved by going with a lower-cost trim level and make a helluva lot of mods that would greatly exceed the capabilities of a stock TRDP. For the same total price.

Yep, the Trails are by far my favorite but I am partial to KDSS so.. but that's just me. Still, I might strap a Trail badge on it just to screw with people.

I hadn't put much thought into the fact that 2016 is the last year of the Trails as far as possible market value goes. As a 2016 TEP owner this kinda makes me happy though. I purposely pulled the trigger sooner because of these changes as I did not want TRD badging just for the sake of having TRD badging. To be honest (and not to disparage TRDP owners) that's all the TRDP is to be honest. I mean if all you are getting is a 1" lift but no other suspension options such as KDSS then to be honest you are more limited than Trail owners (yes slightly less hassle if you were to lift but working around KDSS is not that difficult if we are being honest here). Everything that makes a TRDP a TRDP can be put on a TE or TEP (sans the auto headlights) but you cannot say the same if reversed. You cannot add KDSS or a sunroof (factory variety under warranty) to a TRDP.

Do I love the hell out of Inferno? Yes but not enough to do without the other items I wanted with my TEP.

Also, you can add whatever lift you want + wheel/tire combo + $600 front fascia to a TEP for what people are paying for TRDP's. And the auto headlights? Well... I have two hands that work just fine and my eyes know when it's time to switch them on. :thumb3:

Well, not quite. As far as I know, you cannot get a Trail in Quicksand. :noidea: That was the deal breaker for me. It is by the far, the most bad ass color available. And I never, ever, compromise on color choice.

I get that, felt the same about Inferno but...I cannot give up other options for a color I so badly want. You are right, the TRDP colors are for TRDP's only with exception of carry over colors such as Black, Super White and MGM. So actually you only get 3 standard colors + 1 TRDP special color. :eyebrows:

Good thing I love Super White also.. so that made my selection of a TEP a no brainer.

I fell in love with the Quicksand when I saw it in person. The fact that it was the 2016 Pro only color was the cherry on top. There's no way that I would compromise on color when spending $40k on a truck. First car without a sunroof in a while, but I don't miss it. We make up for it with the Pano roof on the wife's Golf Sportwagen.

It's long been agreed upon that once you take color out of the equation that if you plan to not upgrade, the TRDP is a good deal, if you plan to upgrade the TEP is the better deal.

I may install TEP side mirrors into my rig just for the puddle lights and indicators, but I prefer not having a sunroof.

Either way, your mileage may vary on colors. Quicksand doesn't do it for me, Inferno is polarizing for some. Different strokes.

haha no doubt. Last time I was at the dealer a shop guy stopped by as I was getting ready to leave and started chatting up. He looked around and dropped about the stupidest thing I have heard anyone say "Hey your truck's like basically a TRD Pro" lol WTF? seriously... I mean I know what my truck is and what it isn't...

I agree on the key. All Toyota keys are identical. It's perturbing Toyota gives 4Runner owners a Carolla key. The Land Cruiser and 4Runner should have unique, flip out key fobs, different from the other low end models.
