trail or limited?

Trail baby!

I have a Trail w/Leather. Seat Heaters are awesome! I also love the fact that I had less than 3000 miles on the odometer and was trail riding in Colorado. You can't go wrong with either, my deciding factor was part time 4WD. Oh yeah, KDSS is really saweet! It really made a HUGE difference on rocky terrain. I kinda hate having to be in 4 LO to use either KDSS or the E-Locker. Yeah there is a mod but maybe Toyota had a reason for designing it that way. My wife has the SR5 w/Premium Package and she has 4R envy of my Trail. I like the Optitron gauges on the Trail & the Limited.

plus I also like the fact that less than 5% of the 4R on the road are Trails :guitar3:

Trail edition here. I guess I have make cake etc... also, with real leather heated seats with liqua-cell. I have driven in snow and ice all of my life and really do not see the center diff as a major advantage. I have a 99 Landcruiser with the center diff and you can skip a step or two when engaging in 4 high but doesn't matter to me.

i have a buddy with a limited, very nice, works well for him. Both have there advantages and yes you can modify by adding leather to a trail or suspension components and body mods to a limited to get what you want.

Choose your starting point, and have fun getting were you want to be.

ok guys, finally picked up a 2012 LE 4x4 without a 3rd row seat. i really couldnt decide which model to get, so the fleet manager decided for me when the limited cost me 6 dollars more a month on the lease and cost 3k more. so decision made. let the modding begin. :bluejump:

lease... mod... and you let someone else pick it out :bigok:

Congrats on the new ride! Post pics!

I vacillated for months between TE and LE. Drive both a few times.

When I was completely honest with myself, I based the decision (got the LE) on what the drivetrain of each model offered me when mapped to what I would REALLY be using this rig for (versus 'thinking' what I 'might' do with it these days).

I did not want to be driving the TE with its auto-pilot technology for wheelin and just have them but not use them. I figured even if I had all of the gizmos, I'd not be using them as I may feel a little like I am turning over some control to the machine. My days of hard-core off roading of a couple of decades ago are behind me for the most part anyway. Now before y'all pounce at my "auto-pilot" remark...I am not saying crawl control etc isn't cool stuff...just feels like something that I may not use. Now, KDSS, that is great. But all of that aside, I am not going to be wheelin much at ALL...just easy trails once in a while.

I was initially attracted to the LOOKS only but, as Harper7 so clearly stated (and showed), you can do whatever you want to these rigs to dial-in exactly what you're after in both looks and function....EXCEPT the Torsen Diff setup...which closed the deal for me.

Yeah, I am NOT a fan of the LE 20" wheels and bicycle tires (!!) so I will be trying to figure-out what the right price to sell them will be and go get some others. I am currently getting overwhelmed with the choices (18" 20" Gunmetal? Muted Silver? etc)...you'll see me posting for ideas after I have gone through another few hundred flippin pics and comments!

People always think KDSS is only for offroad when it kills it onroad too. Who doesn't want waterproof seats? Got out of the car one rainy afternoon and got in the next morning with two drops just sitting on the seat like they owned the place. Two words, "hood scoop". Good day sir!

the lease for the limited had a better residual value, hence the limited costing just 6 dollars more a month. if i was financing i probably would have gotten the trail, since that wouldnt matter. anywho, im getting aorund 16mpg highway and 7 street is this normal?

Those uncertain about TE vs LE should get the LE. LE suits all but the hard core offroaders. TE suits a very narrow demographic of hard core offroader and you are either in that demographic or out of it. Buying TE over LE just because of exterior aesthetics is misguided in my opinion.

I was honest with myself regarding what I would actually do with a $40K vehicle offroad despite being surrounded by lots of offroad opportuities. LE is best of all worlds. Going to moab? Rent a Rubicon.

From reading your comments I have come to a conclusion, you bought yourself a Pavement Princess! Makes me sick you say rent a rubicon. You may as well have a veggie burger and eat some tofurki you big *****!:flipoff:

That is not normal. That is ridiculously low.

However, these MPG posts really don't mean much in the grand scheme of things. It all depends on each driver and their driving style, as well as the type of driving.

That being said, your MPG should increase a bit over the first few hundred miles of ownership.

I've always gotten at least 20.0 MPG combined and routinely get 22-23 MPG on the highway.

Don't forget to reset the MPG every once in a while. Also if you do jack rabbit starts like every NYC driver around me that makes a huge difference.

I vote for a Platinum version of the 4Runner with Crawl Control, KDSS, a 4.6-liter V8 Engine, XREAS/Adaptive Variable Suspension with adjustable ride firmness. Sounds like something that begins with G. And if that's the case, please throw in ventilated seats.
