I didn't mean to affend you by telling you exactly what I've heard from the mouth a yakima rep. I was putting that out there informing people. I know if other people on here are like me and have some serious money invested in bikes, I don't want to hear that a rack has failed a performance test. I understand that that may be biased from yakima, but if I'm spending that much money on a rack I dont want to hear anything negative from anyone on it. I have over 6000 invested in the orange bike I posted up, and I dont want anything to happen to a failure in the rack.

No offense taken. I would 100% appreciate hearing any and all facts about a rack thats $400-$500.

When you more or less said "dont buy a kuat rack its more likely to fail"... i suddenly questioned the rack i was using and tried to use my google-fu to find any instance of rack failure that I might need to bring up to Kuat.

My bike is a serious investment and has become a very close possession of mine. The last thing I want to worry about is a rack failing and me having to deal with it.

It was purely your statement "Dont buy a Kuat Rack" and that its "a rack that has a higher risk of failure". Both Statements based on info from a rep of a competing company. Company reps have one mission.... sell their product above all others. Theres a bit of hype behind Kuat racks... and its well deserved.

I more than trust my SC Nomad (my most prized of my bikes) and fellow riding buddy's bike on my Kuat Sherpa.

No hard feelings, nothing taken personal, I just wanted to cite room for error in the statement based on the source (yakima rep).

PS... I dig your Intense... It looks like it would be fun at the local resort. A downhill rig is next on my list.

question: on racks like the Thule Roadway and Yakima Doubledown, is it possible to pivot/angle them down with a single bike attached? All the online information is pretty vague. Thanks.

no, it does not.

this issue is conveniently ignored in every review I've read, which leads me to believe that the answer is NO, you can't fold with bike attached. If the answer was YES, then I imagine they'd be touting it more.

Well... I'm sure you could if you wanted to. i dont think that pin that he pulled to tilt the rack back would stop you from being able to do it when a bike is up there... But due to the bikes hanging, I think you'd run the risk of the top tube mounts sliding on the rack bars or the bike pivoting out with gravity.

The double down does not have a forward pivot angle to be able to get into the tailgate or the rear hatch. The flipside from Yakima does have a knob that you can pull (without the bike on) and it will fold side ways and out of the way of the rear hatch. The flipside also has an intergrated cable lock, and the doubledown may, but I'm not 100% sure

Yakima Doubledown does have a spring loaded pin you pull up to release and fold it downwards away (not to the side) from the vehicle enough to open the rear hatch. Just youtube Yakima Doubledown or whichever bike rack you're looking at and you'll find video reviews.

If you really wanted to fold down with a bike on it you could, but why not just roll down your window if you have already put your bike up there? Or open the rear passenger door. It does have an integrated cable lock that slides out of one of the bike rack tubes to wrap around your bike frame and also a hitch pin lock so no one steals your rack. The Yakima dead lock kit is sold separate from the bike rack for $30-$40 and includes hitch pin lock and the integrated cable lock that you install in the rack that use the same key(s).
