Tranny drain bolt stripped

I drained my tranny fluid an went back to torque new plug in and it stripped,I started at 15ft lbs and than 20 ft lbs,I went off the torque specs in the stickys section,I think this should be changed because after looking its seems to be normal.
I think I can get a metric tap and re tap from the bottom,run a pen magnet up the hole and than pour 2-3 qtd of fluid down dipstick to flush any shavings,than install a new factory bolt and crush washer???

I thought about it,this things only got 101000 miles so I'm going to do it right,I'm taking the pan off and retapping on the bench,I don't want and shavings.
Should I put in a new screen/filter though?

There's no way 20 ft-lbs stripped the pan plug. If you are taking the pan off I would suggest finding a replacement pan instead of oversizing which is what I hope you're talking about. Once it's stripped you don't want to just retap and clean it up and put the original size plug back in.

Auto parts stores (like O'Reilly's) have oversized plugs for just this purpose. They won't require tapping since they are just a little larger than the original plug.

20 lbs did strip it,I searched and its not the first time,I torqued to 15 than 20.
I went off the sticky info I found,than after it happend I was reading the tranny flush and fill sticky and it says 15lbs.
I plan to step up the size to 7/16x14 or 7/16x20 if there's enough meat,unless somebody has a good pan for sale.

It must have been previously damaged. 5 extra lbs would not make the difference. Most morons (jiffy lube etc..) tighten drain plugs up to around 50lbs. That's when they strip.

Since the trans pan is easy to get to I would definitely take it off if you are going to oversize the plug.

Perfect example of why I never torque a fastener like this with a torque wrench.

You can feel when a drain plug is tight enough. You can also feel it when it's starting to strip and stop at that point. It's not a fastener that holds critical parts together.

check Oil drain plugs and gaskets, i had a similar experience on my KLR 650 PO stripped the oil drain plug on the last oil change when i removed the plug and re-tapped the hole, went with a piggy-back drain plug.

Get new pan if you so worried. It's not that difficult to change one.

Got the pan off,there is enough meat to retap,I can buy a new pan for 95.00,or tap for free.
I think a heli coil for 10x1.50 might be alittle to big but I could tap 7/16x14,whats your oppnion?

I was going to recommend a helicoil; I put one on a spark plug in a '89 Toy PU and worked fine for 60k, prob still works, I sold it... not a lot of pressure in that system. Just remember if you have to strip gasket material use a plastic putty knife!!!

I used a 3/8helicoil,that's as close to the oem size as I could get,it's covered in ATF to test for leaks,now I just need to find a decent 3/8bolt and gasket.im just using the stock crush washer and 3/8 washer and bolt for testing.
