Transmission Issue?

It's not the downhill thing that causes me concern....it's the cornering and it seems like it "slips" (for lack of a better word). It must be from my old days when you had an automatic tranmission, and you could always tell it needed fluid, when you went around a corner and it slipped.

Just doesn't seem that should be happening on a new vehicle. I checked the fluid and it seemed fine, maybe it's some sort of built-in module issue. I'll have the tech look at it when I bring it in.

Its not slipping, its trying to accelerate in the gear its in then decides to down shift slightly "revving" in between the down shift process. I know the EXACT feeling - trust me.

How did you check the level on a transmission without a dipstick??

Umm.seemed fine coz I couldn't FIND THE GD DIPSTICK:toilet:...lol

Drove that thing in the garage and checked every crack and crevise..wtf is up with that? I guess the synthetics are good..but are they THAT good? You couldn't add if you wanted to.

Funny thing is it does it on a right hand turn only and never on the left. I tried about 4x today to duplicate it to the left and it wouldn't do it. The right it's probably 90%..and I'm not mashing it going around...nice even keel.

I'll take it next week just to be safe

Had the same hesitation problem with my 2007 Camry and they did a transmission computer flash and now there is no problem. My New 2010 4Runner now has that hesitation but they say a computer flash is not yet available but I will bring it in as soon as it is.

One interesting thing I noticed is that normally, when driving on flat roads in Drive, if I switch over to Sportshift mode, it drops it down to 4th automatically.

When I'm descending a hill and switch over to Sportshift, it drops it down to 3rd automatically. Pretty useful I think.

I've driven/owned manuals all my life, so I tend to use the Sportshift to decelerate the truck before applying the brakes. Just feels right. I rarely use Sportshift to accelerate unless I'm climbing a steep hill or something... then I might just leave it in 2nd or 3rd.

Hesitation Problem

I have the same hesitation (Shifting) problem with my 2010 SR5 and I just spoke to the technician at Toyota about the hesitation (SHIFTING) problem and was told there was no Flash out yet. He told me to bring the car in and a complaint would be filed. He said if enough people complain then they would come up with a flash. so everybody who has a problem with this hesitation please bring your car in! Thanks.

I now have 4,800k miles on my 2010 and whether you call it a tranny or accelleration problem, it is not acceptable. At low speeds, you literally have to wait a second or two for the tranny/engine to find its way. REALLY ANNOYING!

The only thing I can isolate it to is a major acceleration lag. Try This: Put the 4Runner in 2nd gear (that way the tranny has no way to "find gears"). Then drive down the road at a steady speed and "gun" the accelerator. You will notice a MAJOR delay. To me, this is a complete joke if Toyota thinks this is normal.

If you think thats annoying, you should drive a 3rd gen with VSC. Merging into traffic on a T intersection has to be done in AWD because if you mash the accelerator enough to initiate wheel spin, you VSC bogs the engine a LONG time. Scary crap.

As for the grade logic, when I first bought my 07 FJ-Cruiser, it had grade logic and I thought it was a nifty piece of technology. Only one issue, how do you disable it in icy conditions!? O_o

After reading this thread I've learned that this is "normal", but does anyone feel that the automatic downshift from 5th to 4th gear when applying the brakes at the top of a fairly steep hill, typically moving at 40mph-50mph, really jolts the 4R and shoots the revs up? I'm guessing this is just a matter of science when trying to slow down a 4,800lb vehicle, but I wish it was a little smoother. I find myself anticipating the above scenario and either braking hard enough to have it automatically shift into 4th, or, throwing it into sport mode so that it shifts into 4th before I begin to descend the hill. I feel like this makes it easier on the transmission/engine.

Thoughts/experiences/advice?

I'm still experiencing the problem, but now only worse. I'll just wait for to crap to bed then raise holy hell at the dealer because I've complained about it everytime I changed the oil (3) . I did mention to them that Eskimo Choas said it was "completely normal" and the Service guy said "hey"....that solves it right there":thumb3:

Here is a tip if you have not done this already. Since you say it is getting "worse" and that you have mentioned it everytime you get your oil changed, make SURE your concerns are documented in you service file with the dealer. It would be a real bummer if something major happened with your tranny after the warranty ran out and the dealer then claims no recored of an ongoing concern during the warranty period. After you confirm that you documented your concerns with this dealer, try going to another dealer with your current problem and see what they say. (Make sure they document also). It would be good if you brought the truck in specifically for that reason, not just a passing comment while you are getting the truck serviced for another reason (Oil change etc.) Good luck.
