trany breather mod

I search for trany breather mods and notice not all gen 4 has them. As I have the 08 sealed trany, Mine has one. I have seen post as where there located on the top of the trany.

So being curious and deciding or not to raise the hieght of this vent, I decide to pull the hose off and blow and suck on it, guess what. It allows air to vent in and out, not like the differential being one way.

So if any of you that submerge your toys trany high in water that have these breathers, you might want to mod it up high also..

Learned that the hard way... $4,000 later I now have a 2008 trans in my 05 lol

It's not rocket science, just get a longer piece of vac line and run it up into the pass compartment.

Sorry to hear that, Now that you have the 08 trans, hope you put the breather up high or you might exsperiance this again.

On the 08, look between the engine and fire wall on top of trans, the breather is on a 6" hose by the bell housing.

I'm just not going into deep water anymore. I went over my hood because my fiancé said "ooohhh go through the puddle!!!"

I will extend that and the front diff's this spring, especially if/when I regear.

I think all the gen4 up have the diferential and transfer installed already, look on driver side engine compartment, between wheel well n engine. Should be 2 breather caps by there on a bracket.


At Crashman- Not sure, I would think the dip stick works like a breather, the 08 maybe newer has enclosed system, so breater nessasary for them.

But, I could be wrong being a dumb truck driver.

My '08 V8 has a single breather in engine compartment.

Can't really follow it to the source without removing skid plates but I suspect that the front diff and tranny vents have been married to a single extended breather which is what I see in the engine compartment.

I know mine only came with the front diff breather in the engine bay. the tranny and transfer breathers were located on the top of the cases and needed to be raised.

I've read accounts of some 4runners having two breathers in the engine compartment. I'm unsure if it was only certain years or trim models that got this.

I remember seeing 2 breathers right next to each other in the engine compartment. They were attached to the outside drivers side wheel well in the engine compartment.

I'll snap some pictures tonight if anyone is interested.

I assume one of these breathers is for the front diff? What about the other? Tranny?

1 goes to the top of front differential houseing and the other look like the an actuator in the 2nd picture, not sure what it is.

Since the 2 breathers wasn't a transfer case one, I went in search. Followed the lines and it is in the same area as transmission one. Mounted closer to the engine section/ bell housing. Need a inspection mirror to see.

Looks easier to leave as much exsiting hose as possable and cut it and add more with a splice. Next project.

I think that it is only in the V6's that you find two breathers in the engine bay.

As Austin noted, and after a bit more research, I think he's correct, that the single breather in my engine bay is for the front diff. The tranny and transfer case breathers are, I believe, connected together and do not rise very far above either.

Your probably right on above statement. I have the 08, v-6, sr5 model, and the pictures posted are from it. As far as the transfer and tranny they are seperated as my above statement. I did a longer hose for the tranny and just found the transfer and there seperate.

If you are extending the breathers, do you mind doing a formal write-up, and maybe include pictures? I'm not trying to sound daft -- that I can't do this; however, it would be nice to have it, as I'm sure it would benefit a lot of people!

Both of these breathers are for the front differential.

One is for the actuator for the front differential, as seen in the picture. The other one is for the actual front differential, line goes to the top of the diff.
