TRD Pro body lean on road?

So perhaps the best of both worlds would be a TEP w/KDSS and the TRDP shocks springs swapped in... However on TRDshop.com (i think) it says that the TRDP shocks and springs arent compatible with KDSS. What gives?

TEP w/ KDSS probably would be best. Not sure on the TRDP shocks/spring compatability, but plenty of members on this forum have been able to mod their TEP w/ KDSS with other kits.

On the positive, if you decide on the TEP w/ KDSS you won't need to accelerate your timeline to leave your lease and you'll probably get a better deal. The dealer I went through was willing to give a much better price on the TEP w/ KDSS than he was on the PRO. I liked the look of the PRO better, and the difference in handling between the KDSS and the PRO wasn't significant enough to change my decision.

Good to know. And very true about my lease. The dealer Im talking to wants to give me the TRDP for invoice and the Trail Premium for $1200 less than the price of the TRDP.

Im trying to see how low theyll go on the TEP to get a better idea of which direction may be best.

Something else that hasn't been addressed but maybe should be, is that all models of the 4Runner have Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), which computer controls your brakes and throttle input in extreme maneuver situations. You almost can't get in too much trouble with that. I know I can sail off onto a highway off/on ramp in my 2" lifted basic non-KDSS Trail faster than 90% of the traffic I have to contend with is willing to. I have also seen a 10-13 Trail that had to have KDSS go sailing around a curve running 5 - 10 mph faster than I was comfortable doing so and showing absolutely zero body roll. I was mightily impressed at that little feat because I am happiest bending a curve, even in this thing.

All that being said, if you want the Pro because of its looks, that is fine. If you want it for its handling of potholes, that is fine also. They're all going to feel a little squishy and have some nosedive compared to what you have been driving. It's the nature of the beast. None of these quirks has ever made me feel I was on the edge of control at any time in mine so far, and some of them have actually grown on me.

In hindsight, if I were to change anything, it would have been to at least test drive a KDSS equipped model. Less for its better on road handling than for its perceived improved ability to flex off road. But I will admit I was ignorant that KDSS even existed at the time I bought mine, I knew what the differences were between the 3 main models, but not the smaller detail differences like KDSS and X-reas. Going on one year later I still think I would prefer the Trail Edition either with or without KDSS over the TRD Pro. NOT because I don't like the Pro. I think it is a sharp looking ride. But because I don't like to buy "Packages". I have made the upgrades that I WANTED over the past year to get it where I want it, and I am still under what I would have paid for that package if it had been available.

I'm not hating on Pro owners. I am reinforcing that you should continue to do your research and make an informed choice. I still get drawn in by the "shiny" on occasion, but I'm getting better. Heck, it was that shiny new nose that sucked me in in the first place!

Not really knowing why my first guess would be the suspension travel? I know the TRD pro have a tad more travel and that might make them incompatible, even if it's only 1/8" it'll create problems down the road.

Thanks very much for your input! That helps alot.

I like the TRDP for its looks definitely, and for the pothole soaking-up-ability for these horrible, terrible New York streets... Also because in general ive read from testamonies on here that it is very smooth overall...

And I like the idea that the KDSS has the most "corner-ability".

They offered one to me for $39,3××.
They offered me a Trail Premium for $37,8××.

However, they dont have either in stock so I havent been able to test drive either.

Im thinking about calling a local dealer whose website says they rent Toyotas and the 4Runner is a selectable option on their site. Im assuming they only rent SR5's but even an SR5 for a day or two is better than testing NO 4Runner at all....

No. KDSS requires a bigger diameter sway bar that is located down lower than the SR5 and the TRD Pro for the KDSS cylinder to act upon it. KDSS equipped 4Runners also have a different LCA to accept the different sway bar.

Sounds like the premium trail and a set of bilstein 5100's will give you what you want and save a few bucks?

Maybe literally a few bucks lol...

Id imagine with cost of parts and installation it would be the better part of $1000.

Plus I want my suspension to be under warranty of possible.

But I have to read up on how Bilsteins perform under the 4Runner

Can you explain in a little more detail why (unless stock shocks/springs cannot be swapped from non-KDSS models to KDSS models and vice versa) the TRD Pro shocks/springs won't work on a Trail Premium if the added suspension travel doesn't play a part? I'm having a hard time fully understanding this.

Shouldn't the shocks/springs still bolt up the same way?

The shock mounts should still be the same regardless of the LCAs and sways right?

This is interesting (talking about on road performance in emergency situations)...
