Cold week report

Ok had the first sub 30 degree weather last week on Long Island and I heard and felt the clunk. Now that I have different UCA's, Knuckles and a re positioned sway bar, I am pretty confident that the clunk is a characteristic of the TRD Bilstien struts. Today at 57 degrees, I am not hearing anything.

I don't believe there is any safety concern, just annoyance at this point. It could be many things from the oils to the valves to the bushings that are effected by the temp but these are all assumption. Just sharing the experience. This summer I will probably replace them with Kings and the LCA's, but it wont be for another year before I can report back to see if that made the difference, but its a good bet the clunk will be gone.

Man, if it's something inherent to the blistein shocks, Toyota definitely needs to fix it on their dime. Only reason to get the Pro is 1) the suspension, 2) the blackout and rims/tires, and to some, like me, 3) the one unique paint option they offer each year.

Having the clunk be a "feature" of the suspension takes away from one of these three advantages to the Pro. And a major one at that. If it wasn't for me loving the quicksand color, I'd seriously reconsider a Trail Premium.

I can only speak for myself and the other TRDPro that the tech from Toyota Motor Corporation brought to the dealership during their investigation. Once we created the sound on my TRDP we then went with the test vehicle with a lot less mileage than mine and we where able to replicate the clunk on the same roads and bumps. This seems to me, this is not an isolated problem to have, IMHO.

Here are the factors for me:

Slow speeds 1-15mph are the most prominent times I hear it.

Temps sub 30 (the colder, the louder)

I cant speak to any other vehicles outside of the two I witnessed first hand. Another commonality between the two are that they are both 2015's and probably both received the TRD upgrades at the same Dock facility.

My 2016 Quicksand does it, picked it up 9/23/15.

Sounds just like the old S10 Blazer Torsion Bar Clunk.

I just received a call this morning that my TRDpro just arrived. i have a 2010 Trail that i am trading in on the new one. after hearing so much about the "clunk" i just wonder what i can tell the dealer going into this. I LOVE Toyotas…but like many of you, we are paying for an upgraded suspension…that doesn't work. so before the bumper leaves the parking lot, should up have an aftermarket suspension put on it? Doesn't seem very logical.

Wow! I saw a guy at my dealership he had a TRD pro arguing about a noise to the service manager also. I heard the manager say it was normal the guy was furious.

These cases must be related to the ports that installed the suspension, or it just doesn't get cold enough here for it to start clunking.

Mine has the clunk now that colder temps are here. I think it has to do with spacing, maybe at the coilovers, maybe at the the UCA. Someone's gotta mount a goPro down there and hit some bumps!

If Toyota can't fix the clunk, does Lemon Law apply?

Maybe so. Maybe we should look at the ones coming through the East port vs the West port? I've had mine since Oct 21st and have never had any experience with the "clunk".

Gulf States port and I have the clunk.

It is only a minor annoyance for me, and I am pretty sensitive to things like that. Maybe if I lived somewhere that was cold a lot of the time it would bother me more.

Lemon Law: Maybe depending on your state and how good your lawyer is. (I had a full refund for my 2009 Heep Sahara for a leaky roof that was not fixed after 9 attempts and 2 replacements after 8 months and 10,000 miles)

^^^ You don't say? Chrysler bought back my 2007 JK (factory ordered) for a leaking soft top. I did my own case but I am a lawyer. Best believe I won't be putting up with no crap from Toyota.:boxer:

Still got the "clunk"

So I had another shop install the Toytec 2" lift. There is a 1/2" top spacer and the lower perch for the coil-over is 1" tall. Another user mentioned that their clunk went away after installing the kit themselves.

We have had a few consistent days under 30 F and the "clunk" is still there. Maybe not as pronounced but that is hard to tell since I have no scientific numbers and it's only my perception.

Doesn't seem to be that something is coming loose. I can only imagine that it is something inside the shock that gets affected by cold or the rubber pad/bushing at the top spacer shrinking/stiffening in the cold and not soaking up the shock but more like transmitting it on through.

Same thing is happening with mine. I live in ohio and the colder it gets the louder the clunk is.
