TRD Pro Clunk

Update. My new struts were installed yesterday and they look a little beefed up compared to the old ones. Drove over some speed bumps this morning in 25 degree weather and smooth as butter. Bye bye clunk!

Did Toyota replace the struts under TSB or did you purchase new ones? I swapped my factory suspension with TRD Pro on the front. Clunk showed up recently after having it installed for several months.

I bought a 2017 TRD PRO new. I have noticed a clunk noise since about 2-3k miles. It happens when changing gear into reverse after starting the truck. Happens more often on cold starts and cold weather. I let dealer know during first service, they had it all day to open it up take a look. They could not find any issue. If I hold brake down harder it’s slightly less noise clunk. Do you think this could have anything to do with transfer case fluid? Friend of mine thinks it could be that because I don’t put the truck in 4wd often.

Has anyone gotten anymore info regarding the new struts?

Is it a TSB? Is there a way to visually identify Old Vs New?

I have a 2018 and have a clunk/rattle when going over sharp bumps, ex speed bumps at low speed.

5,000mi '19 TRD Pro here. First 5,000 miles everything was butter. Since it got cold here in Chicago I've noticed what seems like front suspension clunking (less of a hard clunk and more of a rocking noise) driver and passenger sides at sub 10mph speeds, over speed bumps, potholes and angled inclines (driveways, uneven & bumpy corners).

Took the truck in for its 3000mi check-up last week. Mentioned to tech, and they assured me everything was tight, but they were unable to hear the noise.

My initial assumption was cold shocks or bushings, but when the noise was still there during a few days of above 60degrees, felt more to me like a sway bar, linkages, loose strut or control arm. I've done multiple gen1 Honda CRV lifts and felt every one of these loose parts at some point.

I did do a little cornfield driving down in Nashville on Garth Brook's Manager's farm. But nothing I'd be concerned with having caused an issue on a brand new truck.

I'll be searching for a solution as it seems like multiple people having something similar. Will take underbody video soon.

Same issue here on my 2019. Took it to two dealers, second one apparently ordered the parts (special order) and are waiting for them to come in. There’s a separate thread on this for the 2019s.

Yup, quite a few of us 2019 Pro owners are having this issue. No solutions to date. It was about 65F degrees here in NJ over this weekend, and it was quiet. Temps down to 30's again this morning, and the clunking is back. :rapture:

TRD Pro Fox Shock Clunk

I just bought my plain SR5 No KDSS and have this clunk, so this is across the entire line. How do I go about this? And the creaky squeaky breaks and the drift to the right.

It's not across the entire line. It's a specific issue with the Fox shocks in the TRD Pro. Toyota moved from Bilstein to Fox in 2019. In 2021, Fox redesigned the front shocks and Toyota issued a TSB for the 2019 and 2020 models. I had the clunk in cold weather and got my front shocks replaced with the updated 2021 Fox shocks. Looks like they just lengthened the coil spring. Whatever issue you're having is unrelated to this specific issue.

Its happening on my new SR5, maybe you know of any other version that doesnt have it.

I got my shocks replaced for free with that factory notice but clunk is still there. Checking in from Chicago 20 Degrees, clunk is progressively more noticeable from 30 to 20 to 10 degrees.


Thanks for the pic, I'll have to check and see if they actually replaced them with the new design or just new of the old design. Do you by chance have the part number from the new design?

hmmm they appear to be the newer version with that lip on the bottom. Still knocking.
