TRD Pro Skid on '15 4Runner TE w/ KDSS

Thanks for making the PDF and thanks to [MENTION=139345]MtlTRDPro[/MENTION] for making the template. I haven't installed mine yet as I'm waiting to put my lift on but I feel it turned out pretty decent.







I ended up repainting the front of the skid. I marred it up a little while doing the cutting. Plus I didn't want to have exposed bare metal in some places. It's a tiny bit brighter silver with a touch of metallic. I like it.

The paint looks great. Mind if I ask what kind of paint you used?

No, not at all. It's just rustoleum metallic. There were two different silver colors. I got the matte finish. Here's a pic so you can see the cap color.

Looks great, I just bought a 2017 TRD off road Premi, KDSS... I know I got to cut it up, but I want to clarify what part number skid to buy. Saw one on Amazon...just want to make sure I'm buying the right one. (if there might be different part numbers out there.)

Steel on the countertops.... she doesn't care about that. It's all the packages that have been delivered at the house and work the past couple weeks that is going to cause the divorce. Ha ha

Trimmed and installed today. Not sure what you guys used to trim but it took a while for me to saw through that thick aluminum! I'm stoked overall except for having to remove the two frame/radiator support braces as I know they are there for strength just in case you're in a severe front collision. Per the instructions, it says not to remove them but there is no way to install the skid unless you do. Also, I have the 1" Toytec diff drop which made it a bit more tasking with lining up the bolts. There is another post on here about them easily snapping off over time if you guys want to prevent that, check this write-up:

I just used a jigsaw with metal blade, cut like a champ, though the tight corners required some backing out and maneuvering. Looks good.

Not my pic but one I found online. I tried to keep and mount the skid to it but not possible. Did anyone else manage to keep these on?

I don't think you can leave them with most after-market plates (except maybe RCI), and I'm pretty sure that the port removes them to install the OEM plates in the TRD Pro (someone correct me if I'm wrong). My KDSS cut-out TRD plate was installed by the dealer prior to delivery, and they removed them.

Interesting; it looks like 2018 models get a TRD trim package option, which includes a TRD skid. Can only assume it will be an option for KDSS vehicles, so it will be interesting to see how Toyota saw fit to modify the skid plate compared to what most of us have done.

Worked on a 2011 GX460

Thanks for this thread. The exact modification worked for my GX460, as I suspected it would.

Also, for those looking to wait for the new 2018 4runner with a KDSS specific skid plate, it looks as if you cannot order KDSS with the TRD package - so they did not make a skid plate for KDSS. This modification seems to be the only way to get the TRD skid on a KDSS on the J150 platform.

Might be a dumb question, but how can I know if i cut the skid plate enough?
I used the template (somewhere from this forum) to cut my skid plate, got a friend to let me use his lift and now I'm thinking have i cut the skid plate enough.
