TRIMMING and getting ready for the 285/70/17's

Thanks a bunch! I AM IN LOVE WITH MY TRUCK all over again! I was cruising today....holy crap talk about head turns! There were so many people turning heads out driving it was awesome! The first thing I did notice was the MPH gauge difference which your spedo says you are going 5-6 miles per hour faster than you actually are going...PROMED has a good link to this thing that tells you exactly what your MPH will show depending on your tire size. Hey this will keep me from speeding now...and you have to give and take for looks and big A $$ tires.

I ONLY bought 4 tires my stock spare is still there. I figure I never got a flat with my stock dunflops for over 40kmiles so I assume I wont with my Stts...if I do I do have a spare that can "hobble" me a few miles.....this took me months to think about and decide..."F it" you only live once BIGGER IS BETTER baby!

The sound the tires gives off is this real light hum....I LOVE THE SOUND it is mean sounding but subtle! Here is a link to my prep I did with the 3M undercoating which probably helped a lot because when the windows are up I can hardly hear any tire noise almost quieter than with my stock dunflops

I was looking at those STT's when I was shoe shopping...They are a mans tire for sure. However, no one had them in stock in Hawaii and to bring them in was ridiculous $$$. I think they quoted me like $400 a tire...something ridiculous like that. Anyways I bought Mickey Thompson MTZ's which look really similar to those tires. However only the 265/70/17 size. So the 285 is just a wider tire correct? Same height-70...right?? What made you choose STT tires...just curious?

I have two suggestions to improve the overall look: Debadge and Destep your 4R. Looks so much cleaner, easier to wash, and destepped gives it an optical illusion that the 4R is even taller than it really is.

However, I just drove on wet roads for the first time. Handles great, but the tires kick all of the water up on the sides of the 4R. Becomes super dirty real fast. But that is the price we pay for turning heads right....haha.

WOw..your Mickeys look great too they do look closer to Stts.....Yea I got each tire for $228 shipped from eastcoasttires.com.

The very first time I saw Stts was from PROMED. As soon as I saw them on his rig that was it! I have thought about taking the steps off but....its what I call the "bi*c h" step for my lady.

I also thought about debadging but I am not sure if I will change my mind after I do it. Maybe I will run a poll on debadging and removal of the steps. Thing is if I remove them then I will have to blow money on Sliders.....grrr

I feel like it grabs the road much better. Really noticed how much higher of a lift I got on top of my 3/2 because when I get out of the 4r I have to lift my leg up higher to get in. The lady noticed it too...Lol.

Doesn't seem any slower to me as total weight of the 4 tires was only 210lbs.

Breaking.... I noticed just a tad. I have to press just a hair more on the pedal. Nothing unexpected.

I would say the most important thing is just be prepared (trimming/lift).

Pictures don't do it justice you have to see it in person...the truck looks fricking awesome!!

Your 285/70-17 tires are roughly equivalent to a 33" tire. A 265/70-17 is just shy of a 32" tire. It doesn't sound like much on the internet, but it real lift the 285 is noticeably bigger, hence the need for the trimming.

Bro....I can hardly see where you trimmed. Anyway to photoshop some arrows on your pix? I wanna see exactly where and what you did. Cuz it looks sweet! Even with the same trimming, would 285's fit with just a 2.5" DS front spacer?

Shucks...to bad this thread wasnt out about a month ago.

I seen the 285 in person and they look friggin awesome...especially the STT's must look insane.

My problem was that for months I was calling around pricing lifts for my XREAS. All the shops told me it was a liability and they wont touch XREAS. So when I went to buy my tires, I inquired again about the front spacer and the guy said "yup, we can do it". I was caught so off guard that I didnt ask follow up questions. Like would 285's fit instead? It was like I almost wanted to complete the sale before I woke up from this dream...haha.

"B I T C H Step" thats funny. Honestly bro, I debadged because there was some dirt and grime buidling up between the lettering and upon closer inspection you could really see the build up. Now its so much easier to wash. Gives it a nice smooth appearance.

It's weird how my 265/70/17's which 31.8 ??? give or take and to go to 33's all that work is needed to fit them. I am running stock and can't even get them to rub. obviously you tires have much bigger lugs than mine .

SO...i am going to have to retract my statement about no rubbing.

I get NO rubbing EXCEPT the front driver side.

When I back up sometimes the tire rubs the plastic body piece that is right in front of the side step. HAS anyone trimmed that part??

Here is the area that I am getting rubbing occasionally when i am backing up.

everyone who has put 33"s has had to trim...

I have no rubbing anymore! Trust me if anyone has seen a 4r with 285s in person you will understand it is all worth it....!!
