Trip to Reno, Nevada

This trip to Reno included drives to Virginia City on three of the old pioneer roads: Lousetown Road, Jumbo Grade & Toll Road; Three of the off-road trails aroun d Lake Tahoe: Martis Peak, Rubicon & the Tahoe Rim Trail still open to OHV use between South Shore and Hwy 50; and the Sierra trail which starts at Boomtown.

Crystal Peak - This is a huge pile of quartz crystals which were sidecast.

Above Virginia City, at the end of the Jumbo Grade. Things have changed a lot on Jumbo, there were times I thought I would have to call for help to get out. The main trail is not marked so it is easy to end-up on the numerous side trails.

The Lake Tahoe end of the Rubicon Trail.

Martis Peak is a fire lookout at the north end of Lake Tahoe.

This is the trail that climbs from Boomtown. The trail goes between two wilderness areas connecting Reno to Lake Tahoe.

Sand Mountain.

One time I made it to the top of Sand Mountain by climbing. Three steps up and two steps sliding back down. Below me a WWII airplane flew around the mountain. I could see the pilot thru the canopy.

Rubicon Trail. This was the day after the Jeep Jamboree.

That's me, at a pretty spot overlooking Lake Tahoe.

Here we just crossed from the Lake Tahoe side of the Sierras to the Carson Valley side.

I wasn't going to try with the 4Runner as the sand is very soft. The wind constantly blows the sand to the top, and as such is very loose. I did climb some of the smaller hills with a lot of momentum. I've seen Dakar, so I know how easy it is to get stuck.
