Turtle wax stained my hood!

Hey All,

Yesterday afternoon I took to waxing my black 03' Runner w/ turtle wax liquid ice (milky white liquid wax) and I was horrified to find that it actually left drip mark on my hood. I have used it with 0 issues on my last 3 cars and I thought that I just needed to swirl the wax in better but I ended up with a weird series of splotches and weird translucent streaks up and down my hood. Needless to say I stopped before I let it touch any other surface.

Has this happened to anyone else?
What wax do you all recommend?
Should I just have an auto shop give it a good buff and polish?

I know that this car is in pretty rough shape and that the previous owner probably never waxed it in the 5 years he had it.

Any suggestions would help me out a great deal. thanks guys

I dont see why you couldnt buff it out. You can buy buffing wheels from your local hardwear store for pretty cheap. I use NuFinish and have been extremely happy with the shine and protection.

If you can't get it off with buffing you might try a clay bar. It should get off anything that's above the clear coat.

Are you sure those marks were not already there and that the wax didnt cleaned things up, but made the edges of the marks apparent now? Mine has wayer spoys all over the hood. . . .no idea what from. . . . .and when freshly waxed the edges are more apparent when viewed at an angle.

It was really weird, I've never seen it before. You can see where it was put on and it would not rub off to a smooth shine. I have had cars with paint jobs half as nice and I have never had an issue with being able to shine them up. I think I am going to take it to a shop and have it professionally buffed. I've heard that you can do that once or twice in a cars lifetime to restore the original shine.

I am just terrified that I'm going to further screw up the paint.

Black vehicles are hard to get shined up back to it's original glory especially if they have been abused. If you do get it professionally buffed make sure they know what they are doing. I've seen lots of black vehicles with millions of fine swirl marks from somebody buffing it who doesnt know what they are really doing. Personally I would either clay bar it then polish and wax it or just get a light to medium duty polishing compound use that then a good wax. I personally will not let anybody buff any of my vehicles. I bought a used pathfinder that was maroon and the paint was neglected. I then used medium duty polishing compound, regular polish then some Maguires carnuba wax and it made the paint look really great. I could see my own reflection off of it. Just a thought but maybe pm a user on here called momo....he has a black 4 runner and from his pictures the paint on his truck looks amazing like glass. Will do when I get home from work. I am just floored by how dull/gross the paint looks when you get up close to it.
I am new to 4th Gens as I have always leaned towards 3rd gens, and I am running into a ton of new issues that I just did not see coming...like my $900.00 stereo fix (my bad..I'm the idiot who took it to a shop I didn't trust).

Anywho...I will post pics asap and hopefully you guys can steer me in the right direction.

The water spots is acid rain damage may buff out but unlikely. wax more often.

Sounds like you started waxing either in the sun or while hood panel was hot. As long as paint was in good condition a glazing polish or even a good cleaner wax and elbow grease or orbit polisher will bring back your finish. Small areas a time. If you machine polish becareful of edges and dont be aggressive, polishing especially black requires patience. Paste wax when finished to remove swirl marks. Good luck if not confident seek profe$$ional help could be money well spent.

I use Liquid Ice on my Nautical Blue, works just fine. I used the Turtle Wax Black Box for my black '03, I highly highly highly recommend!

I have the nufinish paste. Interested to see how it fares Saturday when I use it.
