I was curious if anyone has figured out a good way to tie down the tail gate when carrying cargo which is sticking out and not allowing the hatch to close. For example I carried home a sheet of t111 siding which is ~8 feet long and 3 feet wide. I didn't have far to drive and I did this all the time in the escape. In the escape I tied the latch down to my hitch, but the 4 runner latch isn't angled in a way I can tie this easily. I ended up having to roll down the rear window and tie around that, less than ideal. Thoughts?

I agree with you guys. Unfortunately a full sheet of plywood is wider than the open window. Definitely will use the window when possible though.

hmm... true.
In my old car I could 'latch' one of the rings on the end of a ratchet strap into the tailgate latch, as if it were the ring on the bumper side that it is supposed to connect to. Then the only way to get it out was to use the handle to open the hatch. Not sure if it works on the 4R tho.

Why not use two or three 2x4's lain across the roof rack rails and tied down with tie-wraps for transporting bulky or large size lumber/building materials/furniture? Drill 2 holes on both ends of the 2x4's the width of the roof rack rail (maybe 2 - 2 1/4 inches apart) so the tie-wraps will be able to go through, then pass the tie-wraps under the rail and secure tightly. This will give you a flat, even surface to carry the load and will protect the rack from damage.

I've used that method to transport a kayak about 200 miles without damaging it or my '03 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I also used it on my '06 Highlander and my current ride, '09 RAV4. Funny thing, I didn't have to drill any new holes for the racks on the Toyota's.
