They are drive by wire. That cable is a fail safe of sorts in case the drive by wire system goes out, it allows you to open the butterfly valve a little bit so you can limp home.

Yeah, that's what I've heard. Maybe my '01 is the exception. Go disconnect your throttle cable at the TB, and take a video of it moving without the cable. My throttle cable opens my butterfly 100%. I can't speak for all '01/'02, only the one I have currently in my possession.

Nice to know, that was my biggest concern with taking mine into the Mexico desert, what if the clutch system dies. I had a Cherokee which lost the master cylinder or something. I had to drive it around town without a clutch. Downtown traffic. :fun:

We are talking about the throttle body, not the clutch. There is no clutch cable that I know of.

Well hot damn, you're right! Pulled the cable off and it idled, but the pedal did nothing. Glad you just taught me that! Makes me wonder if there is some sort of adjustment that us 01-02 guys can do to take some slack out of the cable. Or maybe both of us just have defective 01s haha

Yeah, I'm not sure where the mis-information is coming from on that. You're not the first knowledgeable member to tell me the cable is only for back-up, and doesn't open it 100%.

Thank you! To be honest, it just depends how I'm feeling that day. I normally just leave it though; I've only wiped the excess once or twice.

Not quite- the cruise went to a motor-controlled unit on the back of the TB. The only cable on the '01/'02 is the throttle pedal cable.

Thanks man! It is a very bitter-sweet. I will be sad to see the Anthracite drive off, that's for sure.
Excited about losing the body cladding.
Bummed about losing the locker.
Excited about it being 4yrs newer.
Bummed about losing the Anthracite.
Excited about finally getting a manual swapped in.
Excited for a new project.
Excited for a new color I also really like.

PS,
Whoever said '01/02 are drive/throttle by wire are sorely mistaken. The pedal has zero electronics; only a cable attached. There is a motor on the back of the TB, but that has to be only for cruise control.

'01/'02 are NOT drive by wire.

That's an interesting discovery. I've read that it was a drive by wire but never really looked into the details of it. It's real cool reading through your manual swap progress. Keep up the good work!

Baby steps

Lots of careful steps went in to making sure I got the holes perfect- and I totally nailed it [emoji1598]
I even made a master cyl gasket from scratch-

Taped it to the firewall, and held the master up to it. Adjusted the template till it was clocked right-

This weekend's progress SHOULD include pulling the auto, and maybe even some engine harness wiring... [emoji51]
It would be REALLY sweet if the '97 sells too. [emoji1374]

You mentioned Trac/ABS module was in the way of clutch pedal, what was your cure for that?
I'm not familar with Trac/VSC paired with manual trans, you going to add on/off switches to control Trac/VSC or let it control you?

As far as the ABS/VCS/TRAC goes- I really don't know. I'm not familiar enough with the system to say it can't be retained with a manual, but I've been told the manual Tacomas were not equipped. That being said, I think I could really benefit from TRAC, since I now have open diffs [emoji19]
I don't know if my speedo will even work without the ABS/VSC computer plugged in, or if anything else will be haywire. I can find a spot to tuck it up there easily enough though.
I do have the VSS wiring on the '03 Tacoma harness I got, so I could definitely swap to a VSS operated speedo instead of it running off the ABS sensors. I still need to ask how much for the VSS off the same '03.
Got the "AWD" tcase pulled last night. Trying to get the trans pulled now. The front diff is really in the way of getting to the dust cover and flexplate bolts.

Surprisingly, everything goes extremely well when I'm drinking beer. Probably the smoothest trans pull I've experienced to date(not that there are a whole bunch, but a few). Definitely spent a little time getting the stupid dust cover off, but other than that, it went great [emoji1360][emoji1598]

Don't see too many clutch MCs next to that clusterfck of a booster/ABS, do you?

For anyone following for info on an 01/02 manual swap: it's nothing special [emoji1360]

I'll def be using the '99/'00 grill I had gotten for the '97 [emoji1360]
I would love it if it were color-matched, and I wouldn't hate it if it was in good shape. But it's just trash. The '00 grill will be painted Thunder Cloud, obviously.

I puchased my 01 Feb 17, with a bad Trac/ABS module, along with a few other issues. I got it cheeaaap because of that. The speedo and odo does not work with a bad module. One of the syptoms along with idiot lights. I would say it would be the same in your case not using it.
If tacomas didn't use it there should be a OEM work around, You can do it!!

I'm wit ya on the grill mine looks just like it, shitty. Maybe a semi satoshi i'm gona play with it. Along with never have liked fat lip bumper. Have owned it 3 months, spent 2 months giving it a 200k overhaul under hood and bottom side.
