UCA comparison

I don't have a dog in either fight but Camburg is pretty well known in the offroad racing community also. As is total chaos...

I completely agree. Total chaos is a tried and true brand and camburg is a great product as well. I'm just super impressed with icons products these days and that video just blows me away, granted there is a lot more going on there than just uca's.

So as impressive as that video is, I installed the S2 suspension on Jonesyyys truck. Its even more impressive when you experience it. Driving down a trail it feels like your on pavement. Jonesyyy has the Camburg arms, and they had to be rebuilt after about 2 years. Which considering all things is pretty good.

You will have to rebuild any uniball arm after a few years or less. They are not meant for longevity. they are intended for race trucks and have made their way into the mainstream. SO if your going to uniball route(which i think is the best performing setup available) Expect to rebuild them atleast every other year. The rebuild costs about 100 bucks in parts.

I'm in the process of putting my kit together. TC heim'd uca's with icon cdc coilovers. Looking into doing the s2 with omega bypass but $$$$? Is the second shock up front that much more noticeable?

Here is a link to a video of a 4th gen with icon uca's. I now have a new level of respect for all icon products and feel they are one step ahead of the competition.

ICON is one step ahead of the competition, so naturally you're going with Total Chaos. wait, what?

Yes, I was referring to the s2 system, shocks, uca's and other products they manufacture. Total chaos makes solid uca's I'm choosing to use these because I have used them in the past and I want heim joint uca's . I understand icon makes billet uca's with heim's but they are a little to flashy and more expensive. I feel like I said in my previous post TC, Icon and camburg all make great uca's and I don't think you can wrong with any of those three.

Sorry I wasn't clear in my earlier post.

I've driven a good number of trucks with icon remote reservoir coil over. Never really noticed a difference. However Jonesyyys are fully adjustable on both shocks and he has it pretty well tuned. He said it makes a pretty big difference and after experiencing his truck off road, I will absolutely take his work that it made a difference.

And i was incorrect, He has the camburg arms

It depends on how you drive...if you are doing any faster stuff or have a more aggressive off-road driving style it absolutely does a better job of controlling the front end and keeping it more planted.

Wow joneseyyy that is quite the set up...........

Nice work Scott@Hightech

I am looking for the best UCA for my rig...

I have a TE 2012 with OME (HD/Medium) springs and shocks / ARB front bumper with a Warn Winch. Stock Wheels and a set of pizza cutters. I just do camping and trails...

In my old FJ Cruiser I used Total Chaos with NO PROBLEM with them... But now I am between Total Chaos - Icon - Camburg

I think that each have their benefits.

Camburg uses a bigger Uniball, bit stronger and lasts longer.

Total Chaos one's are a bit narrower, so they clear the smaller backspaced tires / wheels better.

Icon have the ability with the Tube UCA's to run a cover over the uniball to protect it more.

All of them yield the same performance and travel.

But for you guys, what would be better for my rig?

Thanks a lot!

Camburg says they'll also be offering a cap kit for their flush-mount 1.25" uniball UCAs in the next few weeks or so too.

I called Camburg today and they said they were working on a UCA with a covered uniball design but the lady I spoke with said it was still in development and wasn't necessarily right around the corner. Also sounded like the cover option may not be backwards compatible with existing uniball UCAs. I was probably just getting the stock pre-release product info but didn't sound like this was going to be released before Q1 2014 (if not later).

I confirmed with Icon today that their tubular UCAs only have "maybe 1 degree" of added caster designed in. Their billet UCAs have more. The TCs and Camburgs have +2 designed in to the arm. So, apparently not the same performance after all.

EDIT: called Icon again today (12/13) with some install questions (new UCAs arrived today, hoping to install this weekend) and spoke with a different guy than earlier in the week. Asked him about the caster since the previous guy I spoke with didn't seem too confident in his answer. He was sure the caster of the tubular arms for the 5th Gens had a little over +3 caster and confirmed with the designer. He wasn't sure who I could have spoken with earlier in the week but said they did have a few new hires around. I'll update again once I get my LR arms off and can compare side by side, but today's conversation has me feeling much better about my choice and likelihood of getting a good alignment after install (and the UCAs look real nice in the box)

Excellent info! :gossip:

UtahSooner excellent post. Great to get some objective information in here on differences!

Well, spoke with a different Icon rep today and he was positive the UCAs have a little over +3 caster in the design and he apologized for the previous bad info (see my edited earlier post with a little more detail). I'll update once I have the new arms installed and alignment done.

that's great news. didn't make sense that ICON would shortchange the tubular design so much (compared to the primo billets). thanks for the clarification.

definitely follow-up with pics and your alignment report. looking forward to seeing them in and hearing your impressions.

thanks, Utah.

The billet UCAs, while they are adjustable really could be a little shorter. I can get a good alignment out of them but wish there were a little more room to go in further.

Light Racing UCA - Current Bushings

SPC's history
Version 1 - Rubber bushings, large washers on all sides (8 washers).
Version 2 - Poly bushings, large washers on all sides (8 washers). These are the ones that fail in high temp climates. The large washers "squeeze" the bushing to the point of collapse. This does not allow the control arm to pivot on the bushing. Effectively, making the control arm bend up and down at the welds.
Version 3 - Poly bushings, 4 large washers, 4 small (2 large washers on the outer most part of control arm, 2 small washers on the inside). This was SPC's solution to an extended sleeve. This does not allow the bushings to be completely compressed by large washers.
Version 4 - Poly bushings, 4 large washers (2 large washers on the outer most part of control arm). In this version the sleeve is longer and is completely butt up against the "tower tube".

Trying to sort out my LR UCA bushings...looks like I have Version 2 so at a minimum I need to remove the 4 large inner washers and make sure the sleeve is long enough. This leads me to the question.

The newest bushing replacement kit (LR 25476) and looks like this:

Light Racing Replacement Spec-Ride Bushing Set for 25470 and 25480

But when I look at the latest LR arms on Wheelers Offroad the bushings look totally different from the latest replacement kit (similiar to stock UCA bushings).

Light Racing UCA - 25480 Upper Control Arm Set

I'm wondering if there is yet another update for the bushings. Does anynone know?
