Ultimate camping mod- rear window up / down and hatch pop with ignition off!

Here's a better photo of the top sill rear hatch install, looking down with the rear window open.

The blank hole cover is a 3/4" hole plug which I installed because I accidentally overbored the first 1/2" hole I was drilling for the red hatch release button... Doh!

It may also be worth noting (it's not obvious) that you are actually getting 5 functions with this. The hatch can be opened from inside, the window can be adjusted up and down, and the doors can be locked and unlocked.

I actually really like this idea. Then you don't have to fish the wire through the rear hatch connection to the cabin (the most painful part of this). Overall this mod is pretty quick though, even having to do the above part, and very useful when sleeping in the back of the 4runner. Made some labels for mine so it was easy to remember which way was locking and unlocking. And then I couldn't leave the red button unlabeled. Maybe you should label yours not just for your sake but for others since the orientation of your switch is not intuitive lol

Lol found this old label maker in the back of my parents garage when I moved them out this past month. Probably was from 1969! But it still worked and I'm kinda diggin the old school look.

This worked out well. Jesse provides everything you need, even a couple clips that broke on me off the rear door panel. I had a question and he was very quick with answer. Excellent customer service and well worth the money for me. Thanks Jesse!

EDIT: the most painful part for me was trying to get the rubber boots between the hatch and body back on. It took forever and I had to keep hitting the rubber with the heat gun to loosen it up since it was in the 30's. I used a 1/8" coated cable to fish the wire into the hatch door. It worked and the wire was run in about 15 seconds. Love this mod.

I think this mod is good but after sleeping in the back for a few trips I learn to get in via the door. The back is usually so covered with dust that I don’t even want to bother going in that way

I totally get where you're coming from. I actually did this on my last camping trip as well because the back was so dirty. What helps is draping an old towel from inside the rear cargo area over the rear bumper. And when you close the door it holds it there.

But can you roll the back window down/up and lock/unlock all doors from the rear passenger doors? Nope. That is a huge reason why I have this mod. It is awesome.

i keep the remote fob in the door handle area.

I never roll the back window up or down when i sleep inside as i have screens on my side doors that i leave a crack open

To each their own as lots of different options can work. I've tried out quite a few different things on my camping trips and this was pretty sweet I do have to say. Screens are a nice addition and a good idea too. I may have to finally just get some.

A stepped bit, works great just dont go too deep and over size the hole like i did at first!
