Ultimate camping mod- rear window up / down and hatch pop with ignition off!

I am pretty sure when I put the truck in drive the doors lock, which would make the red button not function, correct? Trying to make sure my dog's nose doesn't open the trunk while driving down the highway.

Curious about this as well, I don't want my dog to open the hatch while I'm cruising dow the freeway. A covered button might be nice.

Mount it wherever you want, ask for more length if needed. Pick a button on amazon and I’m sure the OP will let u ship it to him if you don’t know how to connect it.

A few people have posted concerns with the button opening the rear hatch while driving. This is not possible as the vehicle locks when moving. In other words, this is dog safe

I received my kit last week. installed it this weekend. Had a couple questions with op quickly responded to. thanks for the help.

I did modify it a bit. I did not like the idea of mounting the buttons to the trim. so bought a project box from fry's and mounted the buttons in that. I tuck the box away into the jack storage hatch. I had to modify the wiring a bit to make best use of the length provided. The plan is to use velcro tape to mount it under the window when in use. keep it tucked away with the jack for everyday driving.

How much more wiring was needed for this? Definitely interested in throwing it in a project box like this too when my unit arrives.

Rear window function came in handy recently while sleeping in the back of the truck. I always crack the windows a bit when sleeping to prevent excessive condensation. In the winter I like to start the truck and let it run for a good 20 minutes with the rear window down and the heat going to help with the window condensation. Also helps to bring a microfiber towel.

I'm thinking a good idea for people worried about dogs and such is mount the switches in the jack area that way you can just remove that panel to the jack area at night when you might use the switches. Put the cover back on when driving during the day. problem solved for everyone!

Hey, kudos to OP for posting these harness kits. I'm a capitalist.

I'm also a DIY'er, so anyone needing the instructions with photos can find them in my build thread, as I spent yesterday reading the wiring schematics and doing this myself. I'll be posting a video shortly. I probably didn't do it the same was as OP, but I got the result I was looking for.

Now everyone wins.

Installed mine yesterday. The kit is very high quality and the switches feel great. With the individual shipping on the switches I probably would not have been far from $50 anyway. I opted to install it in the rear door instead of the side trim. This was much easier than snaking it up and back down.

Is there any security concerns here? If someone broke the window and pressed this switch, it would essentially disarm the vehicle right?

This is a great idea, i would hide the switch and button inside the little trap door for the manual hatch release pull for stealth install. i do like this mod!

some tips for you guys snaking it thru the hatch boot. buy a long ziptie or maybe OP can include it in his future kits. slide that sucker thru like a fish. tape the wires going thru the boot to it and spray some lubrication oil(in a pinch a nice wet spit can work lol)

if you guys can do this, i could probably incorporate this mod with my remote starter kits. could set it up to roll the rear glass up and down. My concerns were running it thru the hatch boot.

The button won't open the hatch if the vehicle is locked. I don't understand your security concern though. Do you re-route and hide your door handles on the front doors because someone could shatter the window and then put their hand in to open those doors too?

I think you are misunderstanding what I'm trying to say. If the vehicle is armed. If a their breaks your front window and hits the unlock. It will not disarm the factory system. With this mod, I think it will since it's going from the micro switch that's at the rear key cylinder. This mod circumvents the need for a key to be inserted into the tumbler in the rear hatch.

I don't want to be right, I just want to be sure I'm wrong. This is a great mod. Just concerned about security that's all.

If someone shatters the rear window, wouldn't the alarm go off anyway?

If someone shatters the rear window and then presses the red button, it won't open anyway. Similar to how OP said dogs noses can't open it while driving because when you are driving, the truck locks. It's like trying to press the button on the outside of the hatch grab area when it's locked. It just won't open.

I would think anyone who is going around shattering out your window will either a: know exactly what they're doing anyway and figure out how to do whatever it is they want anyway or b: not know that a small red button on the inside of your rear hatch is for and is a security vulnerability
