Bought a 2014 4runner with entune, navigation, etc. Looked at the maps and its dated 2013. WTF. Has anyone found a way to update those maps without going back to the dealer and getting ripped off again?

yep for the price of 1 dealer update you can get a lifetime map update on a garmin unit :)

NoDak already gave you the best answer, but I'll add the comment that factory nav updates remind me of an old military phrase.....BOHICA. Look it up, as it definitely applies.

...and by the way it's not just Toyota....but ANY factory nav system.

what was the reply from NoDak? Knowledge for future reference when my 2014 maps are outdated....

Nav updates

Auto and truck updates may be around $170 or so, but that is nothing compared to aviation nav updates (they update every 28 to 56 days, depending upon system) and they run more like $350 to $500 per year for Garmin units, depending upon which unit it is.

Sub'd to find out if the Gen 7 Toyota Nav is updated by disc or micro sd. Where is the SD slot for it?
The 2014's came with version 13.1. My 2015 has version 14.1.

Hi guys, new to this forum.

Just bought a new 2015 4Runner limited and hoping to update my already out of date US map 09/2014) and was shocked to learn that here in Montreal, dealer update is close to $450.00 CND. :(

I would be concerned with the fact that you have US and not Canada maps! I am in the same boat with 2015 mag grey limited. Arrived with US maps installed. You can use them but the maps are limited to main roads only. I have not updated mine yet but it should be a free update to Canada maps. Check the map coverage on your unit and you will see the limitations.

Is it possible to purchase a 2015 without the navigation?

The folks at the dealership told me that they can no longer get any of them without the navigation being included, that Toyota is simply building them all with navigation anymore...

The thing that bothers me is, mine was built this past month, just arrived, and looking at the maps, realizing they're out of date; we've had a lot of road construction around here over the past few years, that's not showing up.

Anyone purchase one of these CD Navigation upgrades off eBay? Only $45...

New 2010 2011 2012 2013 Toyota Navigation 2015 Map Update DVD Gen 6 Ver 14 1 U96 | eBay

I'm going to preface this by saying that no, I have not tried these. That being said...

My guess is that this wouldn't work. Well, I guess it depends on which stereo you have. I have the middle level Entune stereo (Toyota - Entune - the one called "Entune Premium Audio") and it does not recognize any DVD discs that I have tried in the system. This includes traditional DVD movies, burned audio, etc. From the link you sent, my guess is that it won't read that, either.

I have a used 2011 trail and am relieved to not have nav unit. It has the plain old orange radio. I used to love the in dash nav units but have found the google map app on the smart phone updates regularly for free and you dont have to pay these rediculous prices the dealerships have for map updates.
I am suprised with the way smart phones work that many car companies continue with nav. I would guess it is very profitable on their end

I've been very surprised by the quality of the mapping of remote forest service roads. Otherwise, the nav is terrible. I'd love to see a hack of the system that just allows google maps via cell phone connection.

MicroSD updates of NAV

I'm picking up my new 2015 4Runner this week. How can I tell which year of NAV maps it has on the Entune/NAV system? Does it pop up when accessing the NAV window? I downloaded the manual yesterday but haven't started reading it yet. So I can look up a page reference or manual section if you have one to suggest.

To use a microSD card to update do you use a microSD card reader plugged into the USB port?

For those of you applauding the "Free" updates from Google Maps, etc, remember that you pay over $80 per month for data access on that "Smart Phone". And if you're off in the woods or wilderness you might not get a signal. We didn't have cell reception on most of our vacation through southern Utah this summer.

I agree the Gremlin units are better for navigation. The 2015 Toyotas 4Runners are no longer sold without NAV. You had to order the vehicle to get it without NAV, but that was not in option as late as June 1st when I ordered mine.

I agree with the no signal issue in the boonies. When I was in Colorado I had little or no cell service while on the trails. I didn't have nav in my FJ so I was stuck using paper maps, which works fine if you know where you are on the map.

There is a way to get Google maps audio through the Entune HU while listening to non Bluetooth sources. Draw back is that this kills text messaging through the HU.

Touching on this point -- Google maps not only allows you to create custom maps, but it also allows you to store any maps you want for offline use.

I second this request. I think a button on the Entune system for "smart phone screen mirroring" would be 100% legit and a lot of people would love it.

Hack or no hack, that is the feature I want.
