URD MAF Sensor Calibrator

The maf cal is for tuning the ecu, yes it will work on stock but the gains are not going be much of significance because you haven’t changed anything of the way the engine works ie headers exhaust or intake. You can buy it along with a serial cable and other things to do so but it is nice having it preset by the professionals for the various products available

I get that. I'm not trying to win any races. I'm just wanting slightly more pep. Also, if it happens to work with a TRD intake and my exhaust choice, I think I'll be very happy. I'm seeing some gains in mpg and I'm really amazed. In addition to that, they have some noticeable performance gains, which is always a plus.
 
I’m not saying it won’t work and you HAVE to buy other parts or aftermarket products to make it work but for the cost of the maf cal alone it wouldn’t justify the end result necessarily on a stock platform unless you are a techie person.
 
Got my URD MAF Sensor Calibrator installed today.

Truly is plug and play.

Found a spot on the firewall and made sure I had plenty of space to run the harness. They provide a good amount:

I think it would have looked a little better if I took the time to open the factory wiring harness and put this inside. As it sits now I'm probably going to go back through and put it in wire loom that matches the factory at least. I did make it very easy to pull if I needed to have warranty work done, but for pure aesthetics it would look much better in the factory wire loom or at least matching.


I'm extremely happy with the results. This is one of the very few mods where I have felt the results were worth the cost. It was a noticeable difference from the first drive. The TRD intake had zero noticeable difference in performance: I consider it a visual improvement more than anything. The URD MAF Sensor Calibrator on the other hand provided an instant improvement. Worth every penny.

URD has a winner on their hands here.

Well I didn't even make it half a day. Opened up the hood again and hated how it looked. I didn't take the time to split the factory harness, but I did put it in wire loom and make it look a little better. Probably should have done this from the start instead of doing it twice! :)

Yes, if you are not happy with the truck response and already in the market for something like pedal commander, sprint booster...etc.

No, if the truck response doesn't bother you.

If you are looking for significant power gains, you should be looking at the supercharger thread.

ok so youre saying that the maf calibrator has modified the throttle input and made it slightly more sensitive? An issue i have with the OEM throttle is sluggish indecisive downshifts. The downshift setup/system make me feel like this thing is out of the mid 90s.

So my question is.. how much more sensitive does it make the throttle and downshifts? Can you actually shift gears w/ less throttle input?

'Shifting' itself will not be affected by this mod. This 5 speed auto is from 2003 and wasn't built for high shift speeds.. The sluggishness you describe is mainly from how Toyota programmed these truck pedals in an effort to gain fuel economy

With the maf calibrator, you will notice that there will be less 'downshifting' involved to move the truck and it'll actually pick-up and go in gear surprisingly better. In other words, the truck will feel 'lighter' as you drive around vs before. It doesn't mess with throttle pedal inputs like the sprintbooster

This is going to sound a little funny to read, but it is really the only way that I can describe it. I wouldn't say that the throttle response is dramatically "changed," but I would say that it feels as though you are getting more power at the same pedal position as before. Because of the additional power, you will either accelerate slightly quicker for the same throttle input as before, or you can use less throttle for the same acceleration as before.

It is noticeable to me, and I'm the very first to usually call BS on any "butt-dyno" settings. For example - I don't think an intake does anything. But this is noticeable.

Does it change the throttle response? Maybe it does. I will say this: the 4runner drives BETTER. Less throttle for better acceleration. It is the first mod that I feel has been worth every last penny.
 
I don't think the MAF Calibrator has anything to do with throttle input. It's connected to the MAF sensor and associated harness input, and a spark plug coil and associated harness input.
I don't have the specs on it, but I believe it adjust the output voltage of the MAF sensor to the ECU so that the ECU sees less air flow. The ECU then dispenses less fuel, resulting in a leaner mixture than normal. That's what provides the MPG boost and a little extra power. It's also why there are performance and MPG gains on a stock truck.
The reason URD needs to know about any performance mods (mostly intake mods) is so they can provide the correct voltage map for the MAF Calibrator. The reason most CAI don't add much power is the lack of appropriate information to the ECU to account for the change. Exactly why the MAF Calibrator with an intake mod is a natural pairing, URD has voltage maps for most of the popular CAI for the 4Runner.

what fuel are/were you guys using now/before this specific mod? Any other mods installed at the same time? Different/new tires?

While I believe it works. I want to justify the cost w/ my near OEM setup.

I have always run premium - not a specific brand per say.

No other recent mods. I've actually gone with heavier E rated 285 tires than stock, but I didn't install those at the time this went in.

Could potentially attribute some improvement to the switch from winter fuel to summer fuel. That might be a factor.

The maf calibrator was put on after all other mods. So nothing else could have changed the experience. I'm already heavy with bumper and 285 tires

Always been on premium fuel

I think the consensus is that you'll see a performance and mileage gain with the MAF calibrator no matter your configuration. But the gains claimed by any CAI should be actually realized or improved upon by adding the MAF Calibrator.

For reference I saw about 1.5mpg increase after adding the MAF calibrator to the aFe MomentumGT CAI.
