USB Input

Has anyone noticed an issue with this? I have a 4gb USB stick in my glove loaded with music. Sometimes when i start the car the HU acts like the USB stick is not inserted. I have to pull it out and plug it back in. It's not every time, but often enough that it's bothering me. wondering if others are having this problem.

I've never had this problem...always have the stick plugged in, and the HU picks it up every time.

I have my iPod plugged in all the time and never have any issues except that it seems to drain my iPod battery if I don't manually shut off the iPod after I turn off my car.

So i'm still having this problem. I'll be listening to music from my flash drive, get home, turn off the car. The next time i get in and turn it on my audio settings will be on USB, and the screen will just say "playing" but there is no sound, you can't change songs, etc. I have to pull the flash drive out and put it back in, then it starts playing music again. i guess i have to take it in for service.

Before you take the car in for service, did you consider that the stick might be defective? Why don't you try another stick?

Not all flash drive are the same. Some try to upload info for the USB drive before operation. If others are not having issues, it might be the stick.

Try another stick, different manufacturer also.

iPod connectivity

I want to hook my iPod up to my 4runner and the dealer said that if I want to get the $200 interface kit it would require hooking something up to the back of the HU. Is this true or is there just a usb port in the console? I havent gotten my new 4r yet so I have no idea where anything goes, but it is on its way.

ok guys, damn, i'll try another stick!

I'm also having this issue where it just won't play certain MP3's. it will land on one, try for a second, then skip to the next song. I've isolated it down to a certain song, and looked at the details of the file, etc., and there is no rhyme or reason to why it won't play the file. Just today i loaded a whole folder and it skips every song in it. but i'll try another stick and report back. :beer:

I did a lot of research on the 5gtr4 before getting mine and eventually found that the USB only comes with the Nav HU and that all models come with the 3.5 mm "headphone jack" aux input.

Also, the dealer tried to sell me a iPod integration kit with the NavHU and it jacked up my sat radio. It wasn't until a week later that I found out that the USB will support iPod integration with full control by using your normal iPod cable that came with it.

With all that said, and some may find the following question interesting . . . but has anyone tried to use a compact portable external hard drive which doesn't require AC power to hook up said hard drive to the USB port? You can get a 500 or 750 gb hard drive which doesn't require AC power and works solely off USB power and only spend about $175. I have a feeling that 750gb will take care of anyone's music library - but don't know if the USB in the 5gtr4 will support its power needs. . . . . . Any thoughts?

This will be my very first 4Runner so I have a lot to learn. I bought it but havent got to look at it yet as it is just coming off the boat. There are a lot of things I want to do to it, but I am getting way ahead of myself.

That is incorrect. My Limited with the JBL "non-nav" HU has the USB in the glove box.

And about the hard drive - I'm not a computer expert, but wouldn't a hard drive need some kind of computing power behind it to access its file system? As opposed to just flash memory?

5 volts is 5 volts. As long as the drive is USB powered you're good.

Good idea I have been using a couple USB drives for a while without a single problem on start up or with skipping any songs. How many gigs is your drive? What brand? I would try a different brand also.

Well, you did not do enough research I guess The USB is available on ALL trims (SR5, TE, & LE) - It was an 'option' on my S5R, and obviously since I have the SR5 I have no Nav.

5 volts is 5 volts. As long as the drive is USB powered you're good.

Mini 2.5 drives don't work. I already tried it with 4 mini hard drives with diffferent hard drive manufacturers.The voltage is not the problem . It's the current(amperage) as car audio usb only put out 500ma like the old usb ports on laptops. Dell D600's were like that.Most usb powered 2.5 mini hard drives take ~1000ma to drive them. That's why you see alot of drives with 2 usb plugs .

You can get a 1.8 hard drive and put it in a case,format it with fat32 and use it as it only takes 450ma. But they cost more then flash drives,are not very big and are subject to shock.

According to the manual, the HU scans the drive for available files. Is it rescanning the same drive each time the truck is started?

That's pretty surprising. It's annoying that Toyota adds iPod/usb support more as a gimmick than as something that is actually usable. I'm surprised at how many people are having problems with this. It's really not that difficult to implement. :ybrick:

Does the USB drive have a little blinky light on it? I would guess that if it is doing something at all when you start the stereo it would be blinking. If it's not, I'd guess it isn't actually reading it. Just a guess tho.
