Usb output power

500ma @ 5V so 2.5 watts.
So an iPhone will charge, but my Google Nexus 6 - Android will not it looks like. Is there any adapter that would work for this particular USB or is it better to just avoid it and buy a 12v charger?
I would try it. It may work but it'll charge slowly. You wouldn't be able to get any additional power out of the usb. I'd use one of those 12v adapters that can push more power.

Yeah the USB socket is not enough power to keep a large phone or tablet charged while the screen is on. (If the screen is off it'll probably be ok)
I have a Nexus 7 I use for offline mapping and ODB monitoring so the screen is on all the time when the car is running. I bought a 12v charger and then dismantled it, wrapped the little charger board in some electrical tape and permanently wired it into an ignition switched power source behind the console dash.
The use of an ignition switched power source and a piece of software on the tablet means than when it loses power it automatically goes to sleep, and it never goes to sleep when there is power. I think the software was called "Red Eye". Red Eye worked with the USB port charging, but the separate 12v charger was necessary to keep the battery up while the screen was on for hours...

The USB worked great for my iPhone 6, but not for my Nexus 6. Looks like I'll have to go the 12v charger route.

I use a cigarette lighter USB adapter with two outlets, 1 with 2 amp and the other with 1 amp output. Leaves the low power built in USB plug if a 3rd device is needed.
Not my choice of colors, old one died on a trip, bought this at a CVS store.

FYI. I ordered this and tried it today. Works like a charm in my vehicles built in USB port. Originally the USB by itself wouldn't charge.

Correct iPhone works. Android phones don't unless you have a USB adapter.
I don't know anything about an android, I was describing my experience with my Apple products. My iPad Will show not show its charging but it will charge slowly.
