A lot of forums don't let you view photos unless you are a registered member, little surprised t4r doesn't do this. Aren't photos posted online generally considered public domain unless they're copyrighted?

Depends, pics posted on Facebook, etc are usually public domain per the user agreement (that no one reads). However, there is an implied copyright. This was created to protect on-line news sources and bloggers that don't officially copyright individual pics

I would think that fleaBay would pull any pics with a copyright complaint to protect themselves
 
Well its stated on Ebay, that the poster is not allowed to post an image unless he/she has permission from the photo taker. I get that he/she is trying to sell a grille and saying what it will look like in the future, but a smart business person would contact the owner of the image and ask for permission.

I agree. This is the sole reason I took down my build thread as some images where being used without permission. I completely understand that this is a PUBLIC forum and that what ever you post can be viewed by almost anyone with internet access. I don't mind user's here copying photos for their own PERSONAL viewing though I would if they where to make money with the use of my image. A photographers pet peeve!

Yes, photographers have to make money and pictures and there use are how we do it! :)

Don't get me wrong here, I completely support you guys and your rights to your photographic property. I'm just wondering out loud about what grounds you may have to stand on.
 
Anything I post here or anywhere online all welcome to use. I don't have any problems with people using my work, even if they claim credit for it. I've 3D 4Runner model on Google Scetchup for all to download, repair manuals and pics on Flix and AutoCad dravings of many components. Think of it as sharing your art, let the world enjoy it.

I should have elaborated further.... I used to be a photographer... that was my SOLE income. Its very hard to make income if what your capturing is being used for free.

I love to share my photography and love to have people inspired by it and vise verser.

Great question. According to attorney David Amkraut, you can own the copyright of your photos without registration; however, if you want to protect them from unauthorized use, you should register them with the Copyright Office, a federal office of public record for copyright registration and deposit of copyright material, before you publish them. Amkraut also recommends that before using others' photos you obtain permission, verbally or in writing, otherwise "you cannot legally display it on a Website ... copy it, send it around by e-mail or other means, make photos derived from it, sell it, or otherwise exploit it."

That's it in a nut shell!
 
Feel your pain! It use to upset me that both Antman and Harper would take pics of my mods, Photoshop my pics to make it look like their trucks and then take credit for them. I mean really! But what are you gonna do? :happens:

Its fine if members were to use my pictures as lets say screensavers or anything like that. But for someone to use a watermarked picture for their own business without consulting with the owner of the picture is actually illegal.

Like what Mebe4running was saying, would you like it if someone was using your idea to benefit their own business without asking you about it? Especially if they're making money from it and you are not.

Yea :happens:, but its my job, and other people are making money off something that doesn't even belong to them. Atleast have the courtesy to ask.
 
Knowing the world as it is, instead of how we wish it to be, I would not post anything on line that would jeopardize my living. Seems that today everybody posts damn near everything on line but then are outraged when it one day comes back to bite them. Guess its a generational thing.

But I get what you are saying. It sucks.

Even though I am not in any position to profit from them, I always ask before using someone else's photo from the forum; treat it like I was was borrowing a piece of gear, you wouldn't just take to without asking even when you know they'll always say yes.
