V6 owners, how are your water pump holding up?

05 v6.
Generic replacement at 150k miles with HG.
Just replaced that one after thermostat failed on a trip and I had to run with water for a few 100 miles.
Now at 225k miles. OEM water pump now with Toyota fluid

How much was the HG job? I always worry about that with the 4th Gen. 04 V6.

I rarely buy vehicles that have less than 150k, first order of business is to replace, radiator, hoses, water pump and coolant. My "new" (165k on truck - 122k on replacement motor) v6 4runner is no exception. IMO the previous owner might not have blown the motor if he had done a better job of maintaining the cooling system.

I'm anal with my maintenance and always keep an eye on the coolant. Hoping to avoid the dreaded HG problems with the 4th Gen, 04 V6 140K original owner. Did replace radiator last year.

update: 233k miles, still original pump.

The tensioner itself rarely fails. You can just replace the pulley. Febest 0187-GRJ200 pulley appears to be a direct replacement for the tensioner pulley. I just doubled up the 6203 bearings in the original pulley after cleaning and painting it.

I have an 04 v6 with 144K miles. Always monitor coolant level. Is there one definite sign of water pump getting ready to go? I hear no noises under hood. I replaced radiator last year. I have lost about 1/4" of coolant over the past year and wasn't sure if that's normal for age of vehicle.

Did the radiator and water pump last year as we were going on a long UP trip. I am not sure if both were original but I put 100k on them in my ownership, replaced at 255k. The waterpump wasn't in bad shape but had started leaking out of the weep hole. Still shiny inside the engine!

I'm pretty religious about changing coolant as I come from the GM Dexcool school of hard knocks! Probably why the pump lasted as long.

There was an earlier comment that there as was a TSB for the 4th Gens and some weeping is normal if there is debris trapped. I'll paste it here. T-SB-0117-11 pdf

Excerpt: "Temporary Leaks If debris becomes trapped between the mating ring and seal ring a small gap is formed. This allows coolant to bypass the mechanical seal, flow into the fluid catch pocket, and drain out of the weep hole. This condition is temporary and will no longer be present once the debris is crushed or works its way out of the seal. Water pump replacement is not necessary.

If debris was trapped between the seal ring and mating ring an abrasion mark may have been left on the mating ring surface. This abrasion mark does not affect sealing performance due to the large sealing surface of the mating ring. Once the debris is no longer present the mechanical seal performance will return to normal operation. Water pump replacement is not necessary."

Original owner perform all service at intervals in manual. Are you saying there's a certain mileage the water pump should be replaced regardless of any symptoms? I'm at 144K now.

I just posted about mine. I have 271,750 miles on the truck and the pump (original). I JUST like int he past few months noticed the level in the reservoir getting a little low. Never did that before. I didn't check for like 4 months.....and it was just a pink puddle at the bottom of the res. this morning. :nono:

So, it's going somewhere. Haven't noticed any puddles on the ground....but there is some white residue on the bottom of the radiator....so maybe it's leaking when driving only? Or.....god help me if it's the dreaded head gasket. Odds are the pump at 272K

I had some coolant leaking but it was pink crust on the bottom of the radiator which I replaced last year. I have lost 1/4" in the past year of coolant in overflow tank so keeping an eye on it, no coolant on the ground. We'll see. 04V6 at 144K. Always worry about the HG.

And the power steering pump but you only need to unbolt them from the block... No need to disconnect them!

2004 and still on original water pump

2004 SR5 with 235k and still original water pump and pretty much everything engine related.
At the moment my biggest issue is there is a noise under dash when car starts and heat wont come on. Think its a switch valve of some sort.
Wish I could get a new dash also.

Your issue with the heat is a common issue at higher mileage, for a SR5 there are 3 HVAC servos under the dash behind the glovebox, one for temperature, one for which vents the air come out of and one for "recirculating" cabin air or fresh air.

2006 4R Sport Water Pump Still Kickin'

my 04 has 155k miles and the original water pump has no sign of any problems. but I have a 2000 mile trip coming up to FL, I wonder should I replace it prior I leave.

I have a 2006 T4R V6 Sport Edition that I custom ordered from Japan that year and I've been driving it ever since. I currently have 195,415 miles on the odometer and the water pump is still doing just fine and dandy, with no issues, which has surprised me because on my previous 4Runner (a 1998 3rd Gen V6) the water pump failed at around 172,000 miles, so I've been watching and waiting to see what happens on the newer 4Runner.

Honestly, I may just go ahead and replace it along with the belt, tensioner, idler pulley, etc. and maybe even the thermostat just to freshen things up for the next 200,000 miles as I head into retirement. I dropped in on this thread for the same reason as the OP - to see what the experiences of others have been. I'm wondering if I "pushed it" by not already replacing the water pump by now.
