Well I get 17-18 and sometime 19 still with mine. I have a 2.5" lift and 265/70/17 (upsized) Revo A/T tires, this has brought my gas mileage down by about 2 -3 MPG. I used to get over 20 easily.

On the other side, I only use Chevron 91 here in the Bay Area. I drive 70% highway 30% city . I change my oil every 5k miles, only use Mobil1. My transfer and diffs have mobil 1 as well. I change my airfilter every10k miles ( I do a lot of offroading with sand, dust and mud). I never had the sulphur TSB done, never needed it with the Cali premium gas I put in. I run my Revos at 34 PSI as they feel better at that pressure on the highway. I tend to drive between 75-80 on the highway.

I measured my ODO and Speedo with my GPS and corrected for the tire difference and calculate MPG by hand. Just as a note my odo was 3% pessimistic with the stock Dunlops on it, now it is 5% or so pessimistic with bigger tires. I would say check the accuracy of your ODO as well. But above is what I do to get the mileage I get with the mods I have made.

Oh and another tip, with a heavy vehicle and a big engine try to maintain your momentum as much as possible. Nothing kills mileage as quickly as braking and accelarating on the highway all the time. Even in town hard acceleration and hard braking kills your mileage. I'm no angel but I dont drive too aggressive anymore. WHen my girlfriend drives my 4R the gas mileage drops to 15 easily and she actually dont drive any faster than I do. She just keeps putting her foot on the gas and taking it off the whole bloody time on the highway. Get up to speed and keep it dont overaccelrate and then take your foot off the gas again.

Maybe I'm just lucky with mine, who knows.

the computer says 14.7 mpg

all city driving (and very spirited driving *hehe*)

So this is the second tank that I have manually calculated and it has matched the computer within a tenth or two :)

cool, so they finally fixed the calibration with the 05s
 
Well if they fixed the calibration in the'05's they should be able to give us '03-04 folks an update that corrects ours as well! I know, fat chance the stealers or Toyota NA will, but it would be a nice thought.
 
I'm not so sure that it's fixed.

I have a December production 2005 Sports Edition. I manually calculated the 2nd refill and I got 301 miles for 20 gallons. = 15mpg while the computer told me 17mpg.


I'll have to try it again.

I have a Dec production Sport V8 as well....have you "reset" the mpg recently? I believe it gets more accurate the longer it monitors without being reset.

Mine started out about 2mpg off....but gradually came around to be somewhat accurate.

Btw, I have 1800 miles on mine now.
 
weird thing happened lately with my 4runner. the computer has always reported around 18.6 mpg every tank since i've had it, and suddenly last month it started reporting around 16.5 mpg and has done so consistently since then. but doing hand calculations, the actual mpg hasn't changed at all, always being around 16mpg. i didn't have the truck serviced any time around when the change happened and have always used chevron regular gas. so it seems suddenly the computer started to report more accurate mpg numbers with no apparent reason for the correction. anybody else experienced this? :confused:

but in my case, the computer suddenly started to report more accurately for no apparent reason. it was always 2 mpg off like you said, but then lately it's reporting only about .5 mpg off. weird...

14.6-16.2 mpg on avg. on the cpu.

What do you mean by very aggressive? A thread like this is subjective but I get about 18mpg on the screen. 16 calculated - couldnt be happier.
