V8 Timing belt price quotes

Picked it up today and got all of it done, including a coolant flush, tire rotation and oil change for $1,078 out the door. I wasn't able to get it done at Foster's because I couldn't get anyone to call me back with a quote. I'll chalk it up to them being busy because I've only read good things about them online. I got mine done at North Point Toyota in North Little Rock. The price I ended up with was cheaper than the original by a couple hundred, and that was pre-tax what they quoted me. I still spent a grand, but I'm pleased that they worked with me on the price.

I'm just shy of 90K so I have started to do the required service items.

2006 Toyota 4Runner Limited v8 4WD.

As a point of reference my car has lived outside for 3 years in Alaska, 3 years on the beach in Florida, 6 months in Las Vegas, and I've recently moved to Oklahoma City. The runner also lives outside here.

1. Spark plugs (replaced factory NGK with DENSO SK20R11)
2. Engine Air Filter (el cheapo with K&N)
3. Cabin Air Filter (el cheapo with el cheapo)
4. Rear differential fluid replaced (Mobil 1 75w-90)
5. Transfer case fluid replaced (Mobil 1 75w-90)
6. Front differential fluid NOT replaced (stripped the drain hex head....:flamethrwoer2:)
7. Oil Change (Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w-30)
8. Priced out the following (as timing belt/water pump exceeds my abilities). All were asked for timing belt, water pump, thermostat, and drive belt.

Dealership #1: $1100
Dealership #2: $950-$1100 (not sure why the variation)
Dealership #3: $925
Larger Independent (Deals with all foreign cars): $1000
Smaller Independent (Deals with Honda/Acura/Toyota): $695

I hadn't thought about buying a kit kit from Amazon, along with Toyota super long life coolant, and giving it to the independents/dealerships and just getting a labor quote. I'd use whatever drive belt and thermostat they'd recommend. Has anyone used/purchased that kit. From all my research it seems to contain all OEM parts...

Any thoughts on what I should do?

Thanks for the help!

Got the work done yesterday and had a chat with the mechanic who is a good friend and a fellow yota guy (FJ). He told me on our timing belts, it's hard to tell visually if its still good or not. He's done lots of these timing belt jobs on the 4.7 V8 and the ones that have snapped still looked like they were good and are hard to tell even when compared to a brand new timing belt.

I got replacements for: timing belt/pulleys/tensioner, water pump, water outlet gasket, thermostat, thermostat gasket, o ring seal, new radiator cap since mine was broken, and coolant flush

Total was $396.30 for the parts, and $372 for the labor, all in all with tax was $800 flat, great deal considering the job takes 5-6 hours.

Where did you get your work done, who was the mechanic?

Lance4Life- pretty old thread, might be hard to get specifics now. If anybody else familiar with it wants to pop in (and if this is an ok place to ask) how difficult would a timing belt/water pump etc be for someone who has done a few timing belts on smaller cars? Watched some YouTube videos but wanting to get some first hand experience if possible.

I'm sure people will chime in here too, but I have these threads saved on replacing the timing belt, each has a few comments of people that did the change on their own:

I know you already did some research, but hopefully this is helpful. I've heard its not too bad or overly complicated for the mechanically inclined.

Unfortunately I don't have first hand experience in this department, v6 here

I was able to do it based off of the M3 article. Took a while because it was a big learning process, but saved about $500!

This is awesome, thank you. Current vehicle is a v6 and the chain was a selling point, but.... I'm a weak, weak man.

Just bought the Timing Belt kit w Tensioner + Gates belt kit/ pulley +upper lower rad hoses. My mechanic did the job for $400 Canadian dollars

This thread now has me thinking I need to do this... I just bought an 07 T4R with 179k and based on the car fax, the timing belt has never been replaced.

To bring this post up to date as far as costs for this work in 2021, my 2007 V8 had it’s timing belt service done by the first owner at 85k back in 2013. Nine years later she now has 172k miles and I am getting the service done in a few days. All her services (40 of them) have been done by a Toyota dealer. The first 2 dealers I called to get an estimate on the timing belt service wanted $1500 and $1560 respectively. I thought, dang! That is gonna take all my stimulus money...lol! I called an independent service center I trust to get an estimate and they came in at $790. They normally use NAPA parts, not the manufacturers parts, although one of NAPA’s timing belt kits is Aisin, who makes OEM parts for Toyota. One member here brought up a couple misgivings about using an independent and got me thinking. That being said, I decided to call a 3rd Toyota dealer 60+ miles away and they quoted the complete job with water pump tensioner pulley and serpentine belt for $1179....so I am going with them. Their service department is ranked #3 here in Ohio and the first 2 with the $1500 quotes are ranked near the bottom of the top 25 Ohio Toyota service departments. I am happy with my decision.

Most dealership and even independent service departments will put a sticker somewhere in the engine bay indicating when the service was done. My 4Runner’s first timing belt service was done in 2013 at 85k and there is a sticker on the plastic engine cover with the date and miles. I too just purchased an ‘07 (with the 4.7L V8...the 4.0L V6 has a timing chain) with 172k miles. I am sure the last owner traded it in because the timing belt/water pump needed changed and he didn’t want to spend the money on this old girl. If you can’t find the sticker, or any evidence the service has been done...you are rolling the dice. Even if it was done, it would have been done at 90k and is ready for it’s second timing belt service. If you have the V8 it is an “interference” engine and if the belt breaks you will have major damage, more than likely (bent valves, etc). There isn’t usually any indication the belt is about to break either whereas a timing chain (which rarely breaks) will make all kind of racket due to it stretching and rattling against the guides. It will sound like marbles banging around in the engine bay. Not so with a belt.

I really appreciate the detail here. I actually have a V6, so it sounds like this is not a service I need.

I am admittedly not very mechanically inclined. As much as I love cars, I know more about computers and I have only ever purchased new cars in the past. So your comment here was very helpful. Thank you!

Dealer Timing Belt Replacement

Just recently bought a 06 V8 Limited with 117K.

The timing belt hadn't been done, no sticker & no dealership records, so I decided to go with a Toyota dealer.

I have to say the experience wasn't bad. A few curve balls but overall a descent shop.

Timing belt water pump $1035 (less 15%)

Since the thermostat housing comes off anyway they put in a new one. ( I doubt they would have if I had not asked) no labor charge.

Since the coolant is drained, except for the block, I opted to do the coolant flush down the road. For a 1/2 hour labor charge they swapped out the top and bottom hoses. Since I knew the Toyota MSRP on parts before I went in I asked what they were charging (20%+ over list) for the hoses. I asked if they could be so kind as to simply charge MSRP. They agreed.

We also did the Auto trans flush (120K recommended) and the vehicle had 3 recalls. Floor mat, airbag and something else.

I was also able to use a Costco 15% discount.

Curve balls:

engine light came on after 5 miles. LOL turned out the map sensor just needed to be cleaned.

failed to rehook the 110V wiring to the console when they did the airbag recall.

Having worked at a dealership, earlier in life, etc. I don't have a high opinion of them. So my visit was low expectation - high return.

The service guy was great, gave me a 2021 4runner to use while mine was in the shop. Upsell? :-) Service foreman was great. No BS and dealt with the curve balls. Overall, a good experience. Glad to see there are still a few good shops out there.

I just requested my first quote for the timing belt being replaced, local dealership must be smoking crack. Sucks, because I don't really trust them anymore either - the service advisor I liked and trusted there probably got fired for telling people they could get stuff done cheaper elsewhere, but doesn't work for them now regardless.

QUOTE:
Replace timing belt (including timing belt, serpentine belt, crankshaft gear and seal, both idler pulleys, hydraulic tensioner and serpentine belt tensioner) - $2,005.84

Replace thermostat (including thermostat & gasket) - $137.05

Coolant flush - $176.99

Total: $2,506.72 with tax and shop supplies
