I drove one- a 2010. And it lacked low end torque, and that's kinda the point of the whole conversation. You don't have to "put the pedal down" to make the V8 go. At an 1/4 throttle, the thing moves out smoothly and with power.
Question is, have you driven a V8?

That is certainly in the plan (with ARB front locker), but when operating at higher elevation, the forced induction is optimal.Why not just re-gear 4.56's?

I agree that you will certainly feel the lack of torque when towing or pulling, hence the higher tow rating on the 4th gen v8's. But all these people complaining are just throwing out a blanket statement that the 5th's are underpowered and most of them come to that conclusion just because it has a v6. I'd bet it safe to say that of all the "underpowered 5th gen" comments posted in these forums that better than 50% come from people that don't even own or have never driven a 5th and probably another 20% come from the eco light watchers.

I have a Trail Edition Runner and a Tundra Crew Max 5.7.
The 6 motor is a slug. The 5.7 was good but I added the T UR D supercharger, this is how both cars should have left the factory. Those that say otherwise must come from driving Prius'es .

Especially since the 4Runner is classified as ULEV now with that stupid smog pump contraption.
Never drove a Prius but I have built and driven 750hp Nitrous street machines and still think this motor is far from a slug! Built and drove plenty of 6 bangers that would eat your Tundra for a snack before lunch too!
As stated before the gearing is set up to get the best gas mileage since that's all the rage in the world. Why are you too cheap to fix it by putting in the proper gears for low end and instead just whining about it. Gear down or STFU!

I have owned mediocre and blase vehicles too.
Out of all these, the 4Runner performs as expected. If you think or expect anything else you did not test drive or you have unrealistic expectations.
If you wish it to be faster then you have a few choices:
Lighten it up a lot (remove seats, carpet, roof rack, etc)
Run small 17" low profile tires
Re-gear.
If you live in at a high altitude move to the sea side.
If you live in a hot area move to a cold area (but NOT the mountains)
The best place would be Northern Maine on the coast. Some of you could gain 20+HP just by moving there. If you move there, re-gear, remove all the seats and carpet except the drivers seat, remove the stereo and air conditioner, remove all interior plastics and run super lightweight rims then you could expect to gain 60+ hp.
No other choices are available. That is all.

I've recovered a built 80 series that was proper stuck in the snow on a tight trail. In that case a slow steady torque pull wouldn't have cut it. Needed to build up speed to get some stretch in the strap. I've wheeled with V8 4th gens and never watched them be able to do something that I couldn't because of the extra low end torque. The only time that's happened was with my buddy's diesel 80 series but that probably had just as much to do with his 37s and SFA compared to my 33s and IFS.Traction was key in that situation, but my point was more along the lines of I don't think if you just slammed on the pedal from a dead stop the torque would be on tap for such a short pull of that much weight in the V6 to be honest with you without at least power braking and getting the engine revved up before hand.

The 4.0L is a good engine and for the majority of people who are going to use it, it has plenty of power; I only see it as "underpowered" because of the torque band and the few situations where my V8 really shone through versus V6 4Runners on the trail.
