I just got myself a wyeth scott hand winch. It has a rated capacity of 3tons dead lift or 6 tons doubled with a pulley. The drag/pull ability is much higher. Pull/drag is what is needed on the trail. It has 35 ft of amsteal blue cable, and I can make it longer with winch cable extension cable or non stretch tow rope.

I am also using a ground anchor. It sort of looks like the one from cabela, but I think mine might be smaller...I didn't think it would work cause most of the youtube videos don't show these working too well, but it did great, I might just need to beef it up a little more, and maybe add something to attach a second anchor to keep this one down.

I want to carry around a ground anchor because the last time I got stuck in deep mud, the other truck could not pull me out and there were no trees around as an anchor point.

In any case....I finally got some free time to hit a trail and experiment with the hand winch and the ground anchor. I was pretty sure the winch was up to the task but I doubted the ground anchor. It is basically a little metal pole with a blade welded to it. I didn't think this could work..... I was pleasantly surprised. I tried this 2 times. Second time I recorded it and uploaded to youtube. Try to pull out a buried truck or pull up a stepp hill, and you will see why most people opt for a plow like ground anchor.

Good on you for demonstrating the hand winch... I believe it is becoming a lost art. You can use a hand winch in so many situations where you cannot use an electric or hydraulic winch.

Yeah I would love a pull-pal. But they are high cost. Higher up on the list is some rails and skids for protection and a lift. My Runner is stock right now. Not sure of the order or if I should do it all at the same time?$?$ Pull-pal is lower on the list.

Next time I am out on that trail, which I hope is this weekend, I will schedule with some other guys with 4x4's so that I can drive onto the soft mud or into a shallow pond and try to get stuck for real and then try the hand winch and ground anchor again to see how it fairs in a not so nice of a situation. Then if my anchor is not up to the task I can get pulled out by the other guys and I will know the limits of this setup before I really need it. Or I can get really surprised again by......The little ground anchor that could!.....

Yeah I've watched that video of that guy on youtube a few times too. I'm glad to own a Toyota too, mine starts everytime.:bravo:.. but everyone gets stuck now and then. Atleast he's got some kind of recovery gear with him.

I've seen those types of hand winches all over the place for dirt cheap, but then that is the problem with them. I got mine right from the factory, when I was doing some work in Columbus Ohio at the time, and I went right to the factory. I got a little tour of it, the whole 4-5 person, a cat and a dog operation, saw how they braid the loops on the synthetic winch cable, and I got a How-to-Use directly from the guy who makes them. Right there, in USA, out of 27lbs of real steel and iron, not recycled soda cans and questionable steel cable.

Also how he was stuck, with a Hi-lift this guy would have been out in 5 minutes. Even with out sliders or steel bumper. I have the Lift-Mate attachment. Hook that up to the wheels, lift it up and slide something under it. I made some portable ladders out of rope and 2x4. Slide that under and I'm off. If anyone has thought about getting the Lift-Mate attachment for the Hi-Lift Jack. It works great.

Recovery first, if you ask me. Work on the stuff to get you out of trouble before you work on the stuff to get you into trouble.

I have a fair amount of recovery gear right now, I think I am pretty much just missing a kinetic rope right now. So now I can start looking for trouble.:guitar3:

As for the anchor. I don't know who makes it. I pulled it out of my lawn after I moved into my house. I've looked at the all the major hard ware stores where I live and every time I travel I out of town I check out the hardware stores, and outdoor and hunting stores. No luck yet. If I find it, I'll share the info, cause I also want another one.

Yah, I need a kinetic rope my own self.

That anchor is small enough that it might be marketed for ATVs.
