Virginia state inspection

I took my 4runner in to get its virginia state inspection and the inspector told me he would fail me because I have an aftermarket suspension thats more then 3.5 inches. I have the icon suspension and its probably under 3 inches not even 3. i kept telling him it was only a 3inch lift. Very mild compared to what i normally see. Then he came out with tape measure and measured from the ground to the top of the wheel well and told me I had a 5 inch lift. i left and took it to another place and passed. At least he gave me a heads up so I could leave. Does anybody know what the actual rule is? i thought it was measured using the bumper and i thought the other limit had to do with body lifts. i wasn't sure if they changed the rule. First time I've ever had an issue with a coilover lift.

thanks for posting that link. always handy to know your state's statutes re: lifted vehicles, tires, mud-flaps, aftermarket mufflers, intakes, etc.

thanks for the links. I've seen a few of them before and most talk about measuring from the bumper which was how i thought it should be done. The inspector wouldn't tell me what the reference point was that he used. I just saw him measure from the top of the wheel well to the ground.

Used to have that problem with my Wrangler. I believe the rule is in regards to how high the bumper can sit. And the rule is different for "cars" and "trucks". My lifted Wrangler was under the "truck" limit but Virginia considers them to be "cars".

Long story short, go to some hole in the wall place and slip the guy an extra 20. Makes your life way easier.
 
i ended up going to another place and had no issue. I was just shocked that such a mild lift would cause an issue with the inspector.

Some guys are ridiculous. I had guards on the tail lights that came from the factory and a guy made me take them off before he would pass it. I borrowed his screwdriver, popped them off, he passed it, and then I used his screwdriver to put them back on right in front of him. Some guys just like to hassle you.
