Volant Cold Air Intake

The main problem is when you first get it, you drive like crazy and stomp on the throttle to see/feel the difference, which is normal. But, this kills your mileage, hehe, so your first tank after this mod I'm sure will be lower.

I've been selling these volants for a while and they will help on mileage. I have a guy with a Nissan Titan said he used to fill up his tank right at 300 miles, now with the volant he can go to 340 miles. He does all highway, but was very happy with this.

Results so far look promising for me. I finally did a tank where I drove halfway normal, I'd say 90% city driving and had the A/C on half the time and still managed 17 mpg. I don't think I would've gotten this kind of mileage otherwise...Its gonna take a while to gather some useful data though...

Hey you got a different and bigger filter than I did!! Mines a much smaller round conical filter, not an oval conical one like you have!!! Anyone else notice this?

well i havent seen mine yet, but i better have the biggest filter i can...as with the Ram airsystem that im going to modify off of Ysartko's idea, im going to need the largest cone area i can.

Yeah..? I got the same oval filter. I initially thought the 03~04 and 05~06 must have different filter, but I noticed that Ysutarko has an 05 like yours. Interesting.

btw guys. My filter seems not oiled from factory. Maybe it is, and I don't know any better. But, it looks a bit dry compared to the K&N I had before. How does yours look?

I have used Bumper inserts for brake cooling and intake charge before and have seen limited performance gains out of them in high hp applications.

They work much better on brakes than on intakes....in addition, the placement needed to take the most effect of ram pressure would need to be directly in the relative wind.

I have been off for a while and was thinking on my break about ideas for the scoop.

I came up with my theory that we dont necissarily have to run a hose into the box from the hood scoop, just into the space infront of the box where the intake hole is. the hole itself sucks in enough air, the problem is it happens to be warm from the engine. if we were to open up the scoop and run a duct from the front of it over to the general area of that hole in front of the box and point the tubing downward, the excess rain and water and bugs would be pushed down toward the wheel well yet we would still have plenty of colder air for the box to breath....

again this is just a theory and Im sure someone has already thought of this so Ill just wait to see what everyone has to say before I do anything...

Y, that top to your box is badass. I think I want to do that....

lee you are right...your thoughts would net colder air but at more of a static setup and not the relative ram pressure that would be the most beneficial. ti s not necessary to add a hose, those that are doing it are just trying to gain the maximum pressure from a ram air setup. Though I have seen data that supports that ram air, especially in a setup that we use would need to be well in excess of 100mph before there would be a noticeable difference.

Because of the change in size of the filter box and the flow capability of the new setup, you actually gain power even though you are ingesting warmer than normal air.

My issue with the setup is that they took the effort to make the setup take in air from the normal "cold" oem location but then left that whole front section open, which is really defeating the purpose of the relativley colder intlet. It is true that the velocity and drop in pressure does help to make up part of that but there is always room for improvment. Honestly, I have to say that the more I see this intake, the less and less im impressed with it from an engineering/design standpoint.

I think the reason they made that extra hole in the front is because alot of their other intakes have cool little scoops and holes that grab cooler air on other vehicles. The 4Runner on the other hand must not have had much potential in that dept. so what they did was put a hole in the front hoping they could get some cool air through the grill and keep it from looking like you just wasted your money on an airbox that does the same thing as the factory one.

You guys should try the gap above the headlight, I noticed a difference.

What size filter do you have? Is it a round-conical filter, or an oval-conical filter? I'm trying to see if I got jipped on my filter element.

BTW, Im still interested in your custom tuner setup you were going for so when you get done with everything and have some time hit me up with a pm and let me know if the tuning helps for the shift patterns. I still feel like it is holding in 3rd and 4th longer than normal....

it is so quiet when just crusing but when i give it a little gas it sounds great

A couple things...

Does anyone know off the top of their head what filter size they sent with the '05 V8 kit? I know there were a couple different sizes sent out, I got the smaller one I'm trying to find out what size it is and I don't have access to my truck at work.

Also, Jason B. if you're reading this, can you find out from Volant if I got sent the wrong filter? In his above post, YSutarko got a larger filter than I did. His is oval shaped and mine is conical. Any ideas here?

While im sure that you arent really loosing alot of CFM flow since the entire intake flows better than stock...i would want the larger filter as well.

- Looking at picture of one page instruction, box will be attached using 2 stock bolts. I did not see 2 holes on the bottom of the box - do you have to drill the 2 holes?

I am novice with regards to anything related to engines. The instruction looks straight forward, but I wish there was more like step-by-step from removing stock to installing CAI.
I'll take a stab at it this weekend.

You do NOT need to drill the holes, they should be there. If they aren't, Volant screwed up (big suprise). I'd get someone on the phone and tell them the situation ASAP.

My intake arrived yesterday and I started doing the workbench portion of it. With the bad weather coming in over the weekend I will be in the garage putting it in. Kind of sucks can't play golf so I guess I'll work on the 4runner.

edit: Got home early and finished the installation. I must say the fit and finish could've been alot better. I'm not a big fan of the lack of clearance on the radiator fan. I also don't like that my air filter (wide one) hits the inside of the air box. In my opinion better shaping to avoid the fan was possible and all 3 bolts should be used to bolt it down not just 2. These of course are minor things and all in al I like the intake. I just think more time could've been taken to fix the minor issues.
