I'm gonna say yes? I was only able to test it out in my yard. So not much room to really get on it. But stomping it on dry grass it never cut out.

Here is the skid control ECU. It is under the dash in-between the parking brake and brake pedal. At least on our cars (2003 & 2004 V8s). The red arrow points to the plug you'll need to unplug and work with.

Find the red/white wire, cut it and tap it into the red/blue wire.

You're the man! Thank you for the detail and insight. I spent WAY too long modifying my switch to the on/off mode instead of momentary. I ended up sorta getting guitar string to work, but it feels super fragile and may get stuck in the on position... in any case, I'm gonna grab some wire taps from ACE today and see if I can tap the two wires together.

It's done! My '04 has the same procedure as yours. I spliced the red/white into the red/blue. I modified my switch to finally work consistently. I actually took apart the DAC button to get the exact dims and wire thicknesses I needed to get it to work. I ended up using guitar string (high E and a G string) to match the components of the DAC switch.

When I hit the button, the CDL light comes on, but no engagement of the locker, and the VSC Off light comes on as well. Everything seems to work as intended!

So I did the VSC off mod and the vsc light comes on and I can spin the wheels with the throttle not being cutoff, but it appears that ATRAC is still enabled. I thought ATRAC was disabled when VSC is off?

You didn't do anything new - if you read the rest of the threads, wiring for 03/04 is detailed for using a stock switch and modding the switch is also detailed.

Is there a reason not to switch the ECU with one from a 2008? It sounds like the harness has the wiring for the trac off, but when it gets to the computer it doesn't do anything. Wouldn't replacing the computer with one that for sure has the trac off feature fix it? (This may be a really stupid question, I don't have a ton of experience with car electronics)

Been lurking here for a while. Bought a 2007 4Runner SE 4WD V6 a few months ago… and I freakin love this thing. I’ve read through a bunch of the VSC OFF mod threads, but I still have questions.

1. With regard to CJ3Flyr’s method in the original post #1 of this thread:
What happens when you shut the truck off with the VSC OFF switch activated? When you turn the vehicle back on, does it cause an error with the self-checks? This was mentioned briefly by [MENTION=22558]CJ3Flyr[/MENTION] quite a while back.

2. After wiring up the switch for this mod (see original post #1 of thread), will the CDL and VSC OFF lights remain on at all times, even when my truck is in 2H (without the VSC OFF switch activated)? This wasn’t super clear to me. I want to know if my dash lights will function as normal when the modified switch is not activated. Or will I always have the CDL and VSC OFF lights illuminated at all times?

3. Did anyone figure out a way to do this mod with a momentary switch and a relay? There was something mentioned about this being able to reset to the default vehicle settings once the ignition is switched off.

Hey Y'all,

I did some serious investigation to figure out how to cleanly defeat the TRAC control on the 4Runner. After wiring diagram searching I finally figured out that we're pre-wired for a TRAC OFF switch. I pulled the panel under the steering wheel and found the 2 clips tucked up and away above the fuse panel. There's one with a blue clip and one black. The wiring diagram shows that there is a red wire with a white stripe. That wire is in the BLUE harness clip. So that's what I'm using. Ordered a TRAC OFF switch today from eBay. Part number: 84988-AE010. The button from a 2WD for "AUTO LSD" is equivalent to this switch, just reads different. If you need that part number, its 84988-35050. But to be consistent, I wanted my 4WD to have the TRAC OFF reading on the button.

Getting the button next week. Will update then.

I thought about doing this project while working around the BECU this weekend. I have a '03 and it looks like the Red with white wire already exists between the skid control ECU and the TRAC OFF switch.

I was hoping that by plugging in the TRAC OFF switch, and pushing the button while the engine is running, I'd see VSC OFF come on in the dash. Since it's a momentary switch, the VSC OFF will go away when the switch is released. But, I got no love :cry2:

I know that some of you are talking about a Red with blue wire on pin 26 on your ECU but i got a Red with white wire on the pin 26 of my ECU as shown below from my EWD. However, more reading revealed that the wire from the TRAC OFF switch may need to go to pin #3 on the ECU as shown below. In my case, I'd need to cut the Red with White wire going to pin #26 and then connect it to Red with Blue wire on pin #3. Am I understanding this correctly?

Of course the sw has to be changed from momentary to maintained using the method described on the FJC forum.

Curious what else is needed to achieve this on a '03?

Confused on trac off mod

I recently bought an 05 sr5 v6 4WD 4runner. I have had many issues with the VSC because it cuts power while in the snow. Ive read about this traction removal mod, can anyone dumb it down to someone who doesnt understand wiring that well. If anyone can give me a checklist on how to perform this mod, I would much appreciate it.

While this did trigger some lights it did not stop my truck from trying to kill me on a corner. I've done many ztc calibrations, too. I don't understand how to stop my truck from trying to kill me and my girlfriend on corners. It only did it since putting bigger tires on.

VSC Mod Questions. Many complications

I have a 2003 V8 4runner that I am hoping to do a VSC mod on so I can toggle it on and off while driving.

After copious amounts of reading, I am getting some conflicting info on how to do the mod.

This is what I am trying to achieve: One switch that entirely disables VSC, ATRAC, ABS, etc. and can then be re-enabled by cycling the ignition. -this one seems straight forward, splice red wire on master cylinder to interrupt the signal. -QUESTION: Can this be done with a momentary switch so that I can press it, disable all features, but not have to switch it back in order to have them all return after an ignition cycle.

Second Mod: I would like a separate switch that CAN be toggled on and off while driving that can disable VSC exclusively but doesn't require cycling of the ignition. -Caveat: I have swapped the transfer case on this 4runner to an FJ T-Case and wired the CDL light to engage when the 4WD is engaged. I am hoping someone can point me to how I can make this switch exclusively disable and re-enable VSC without piggybacking the CDL system/light or 4WD computer.

Bonus: photo one has an unused connector in the driver side kick panel above the parking brake. What was this connector used for in other models? Can it be repurposed into any of the things I mentioned above. Can I gain a feature of another model by finding that switch and connector and plugging it in?
