I have been lookin at the JVC XR810. Are there any units similar as it is discontinued and most places are sold out. I don't need DVD or Nav. I doubt I could install it myself but most places just want to sell flat screen nav and dvd units. I see the Scion Pioneer units seem popular. Which would work in a '03 JBL. Also should I look into dumpin stock speakers or does a new H.U. do the trick for improved sound. The stock CD player wont play, load, or anything it just says "Wait". Previous owner said CD's are stuck in there. Oops. Slowly Moding to make it my own. So far LED tails and BHLM. Next: stereo, muffler(V8), wheels/tires and lift.

dang.. looks like I'm late on the XR810. The 810 is sold out at Sonic and Crutchfield now. I found a press release that JBL is coming out with new units (seem just slightly updated). See below links for press release and where you can press order the one model. I think I'm going to hold out for the KW-R900BT to show up at Crutchfield.

i changed out my front speaks for some kenwood excelon components and added a xr4s amp to run the fronts and a sub sounds great. h.u. was the first to go i have a pioneer but want to change it out. the pioneer output stage is kinda weak.
 
we have an KW-AVX840 on display at might work i might be able to get a deal on if you're interested. is that legal on the forum here? if not sorry.
 
I ended up with the Kenwood KW-HDR81BT. Its basically a replacement for the one referenced in this thread. You'll see it doesnt show up in any searches yet... haha - I was "anal" and was searching and searching and ended up finding the below JVC Press Release with the 2012 models:

Not bad at all for HD Radio + Bluetooth + Rear USB/etc. I ended up pre-ordering by phone (because this one isnt even set up on their website yet). Can't wait until it ships! Oh and I also ordered the steering wheel controls from Amazon (the Axxis one), and a good cell phone holder from proclip.com.

I've been looking for a double din unit to replace my JBL factory 04 radio with as well. Navigation isn't a deal breaker, but I'd prefer something that can do it and can use my ipod without spending 1000 bucks.

Do any of you guys who went with non nav units have any advice on that?

I forget the brand, but one if the touch screens can use your iphone, docked to display navigation on the double din unit through your iphone with an app called ''motionx'' or something? Do a google or check crutchfield. It may even be jvc.

Thanks for the write-up. I did the same research a couple of weeks back. If there's a "season" for receivers it might be: Announce at CES in January, deliver in the upcoming months. Unfortunately, JVC didn't have a similar press release detailing their double-din multimedia receivers. Or, if they did, I couldn't find it.

I'm guessing that anything with iPhone/Android integration is going to improve at a fairly rapid pace. Therefore for someone like me, I would want to get the latest available technology. Right now I'm looking at the JVC KW-AV60 & it's Bluetooth sister. I think I'll wait another month or so to see what else is available and pull the trigger. I've had the stock HU for 8.5 years, another month or so won't kill me.

Wow - I did a search and found the one you're referencing. That is tempting, and I see it actually does have a detachable face too. That was part of my concern at first... (It's a sad world that we live in that I had decided a couple weeks ago that I was not going to get a touch screen because of the fact that thieves would be tempted to break windows and mess your dash up just for the unit...) I originally thought all touch screens did not have detachable faces, but I see JVC does.

Plus its getting a little rich for my blood! haha. I'll just stick to the Nav on the 4.3 inch Evo screen with the ProClip. I can bluetooth the sound of the Nav & all that through the system, so it's not that big of a loss. Plus, more simplistic. But - just know that my heart of hearts would rather have a touchscreen! But with the factors mentioned above, and the fact that I park in the Strip District and walk to Downtown Pittsburgh, I didn't want to have my T4R be a target and/or remove the faceplate every day.... I guess I'm overly concerned... haha --> same reason I park in the far extreme corner of my parking lot every day so I don't get "dinged"!

It seems like the non-nav units top out around $350-$400. The Nav units go from $700+. I hear what you're saying about theft. I definitely don't want to make myself a bigger target by adding the nav. However, I want it to be as functional as possible. So I'll draw the line right before spending the additional $2-300 for nav.

FWIW, when I lived in AZ (this was probably 96-97 or so), I had a detachable face stereo in a convertible. Of course I took it in with me whenever I went somewhere. Some knucklehead broke into my car and turned everything upside down to try to find the faceplate. Apparently a lot of people just stuck them in the glove box (my wife included) thinking they were safe.

Haha - I'm definately one of those that feel comfort in throwing it into the glove box too! (Foolishly... Lol).

I guess I'm like ''undecided'' on what I realllly want, which is why I ended up taking the safer/cheaper/easier for my Wife to use option too in the non-touch double DIN. (She rarely drives it, but sits shotgun every day on the way to work at least!)

Good call. That's definately a good option as well. One note that it doesn't have a rear usb (but does have rear aux input). If that's important to you.

Also, I think I'm one of the few that am a fan of HD radio... Lol

On a side note, I've read the diversity antenna thread, but am still confused about providing power to the signal booster. Hopefully when this thing finally ships and I go to install, ill figure it out... I bought the GM antenna adapted and ''Y'' for it as well. I'll need all the reception possible to keep HD Radio from coming in/out.

I think some of the JVC's have both front AND back USB ports. I would want the ipod connection coming from the back so I could thread it. I think a front connection would be useful for tunes on a USB thumb drive.

Right now I have a DICE iPod connector threaded through to the center console. I drillled a hole just wide enough to push through the usb side of the cable.
 
My JVC HDR81BT shipped! Getting it Mon, and should b installed by the weekend. I'll try to snap some install pics while I'm at it and a quick review.
