Is there a simple plug in module for remote start? Or is the aftermarket the best source? Anyone have a favorite option for cost and ease of install?

No plug n play. Lots of wires to connect. I did it in the past with my Jeeps, but I swore never to do it again.
I have a code alarm, 2 way pager with remote start. Not sexy, but it works. The factory piezo (beep beep sound when you lock/unlock your door) is disabled. That is replaced by the 4R horn. I had it disabled b/c I couldn't stand it. If I had to do it again, I would save up and get a Viper remote start. This was a year ago, no problems, range is pretty good. Be warned: the battery in the 2 way pager has to be replaced every 4 months (approx).

Improvements for the CM7000 Platform include dual RS232 data ports, low current outputs, and brain got much smaller.
One major factor that sets compustar apart from everyone else out there.

Today, you do not want a full alarm. You do not think you want or need 2 way, 1 mile, or rechargeable remote. you opt for simple remote start with simple 1 button remote. Fine, lets say you pay $300 out the door installed.
Next week, you have buyers remorse. You know, i should have bought the two way, the range sucks, or you know what, i should have treated myself and bought the drone mobile cell phone interface, or dayum....i read on T4R from a post steve made about all the cool things you can do with a compustar. I want what he has, you can. the remote start brain CM7200 can be upgraded to full alarm starter by simple rewiring and feature settings. Not saying its easy to do after the fact, but it can be done. Not many of compustar's competitors can say that or even do that.
consider this when you choose a system against compustar

BUT, this is all my opinion. I chose to be a compustar pro dealer since 2003 and was a compustar user since 1999 before i opened my shop in 2003. before compustar came into my life, i was a HUGE Viper fan. Compustar's AS2000 paging remote control won me over with its range and features in 1999.
Lots of people are going to tell you different things. They will tell you autopage or vipe or python or code alarm or their grandma is better. Its all subjective to what the shops primary brand is. This 1 mile range stuff, compustar had it back in 2004, viper 2007, autopage ??, code alarm 2010?
I dont sell autopage because it a huge PITA to get replacement remotes or any service on old hardware(lifetime warranty right? SMH).
I dont sell Viper/Python/automate/Rattler/Boa/Clifford/Valet because its all the same just a different name and they have 2312774912 different remotes. Your head will spin trying to keep up.
i dont sell code alarm because the systems are not upgradeable like the compustars. they cant do on board bypass modules. again remotes are a pain in the butt to get, servicing old hardware is another PITA (lifetime warranty hahaha)
I do sell Compustar. I stand behind their products because when i have a problem, there is NEVER EVER a issue. Its "ok swap it out with one from your existing inventory and i will send you a replacement next day air or upgrade the customer and i will send you out a replacement".
Compustar stood by me since 2003, I will continue to be a compustar fan boy LOL.

Plug in like what? Are you referring to a T harness?
If so, no. You will not find the harness for high current applications like 4th gen runners. It's going to be a full install with transponder interface. Everything is analog in these cars. Nothing on data except transponder.

Recently bought a 4Runner from a private seller. He was the original owner and had a starter installed, AVITAL is on the remote I have. The original Toyota remote didn't come with the vehicle, I'm assuming Toyota removed it when they installed this starter...
Now to get to my point (lol)! The previous owner had the starter REMOVED because it would "go on at 2 am" and pretty much, all the features of this remote are useless. It doesn't beep or honk to let me know its locked...
Should I go ahead and get a new aftermarket starter put in? I like the idea of the Compustar one, opening the back window, etc.

The factory keyless module will still be there, you just need a new remote.
If you want remote start buy a DEI product (viper, avital, there are more)

Funny, I was recently looking into remote start more out of curiosity. My parts department could only find units for '05+ 4Runners, but that part number brings up an Avalon Remote Start for smart key... My coworker and I were just talking about this oddity earlier today.
I may go aftermarket, but I'm not entirely sure I want to at this point.

I would like your thoughts on a Viper 5606V, Dball 2 and VSM200. A local shop has it priced at $713.54 installed.
Does that sound right? On Amazon I am finding the complete package with all three items for $199.99
I'm assuming the $399.99 for the 5606V is installed.
