Makes for a quick warm-up of the engine.... and also lets all the snow melt off my 4Runner. Gotta love a warm garage.
The only downside is that a warm garage tends to accelerate rust/corrosion from road salt.

Actually you are close but still not quite right. 5w30 flows easier when it's hot. Read that info from "How Stuff Works" again.
Here is what really happens with multi-grade oils:
At a given "colder" temp, that 5w30 oil performs the same (viscosity speaking) as a straight 5w oil at that temperature.
But when you warm that same 5w30 oil to a given operating temp, the viscosity only thins out to the same as a straight 30w oil would be at that same temp. The implication here is that the straight 5w oil would be much too thin for proper protection at the higher temps and the additive that makes the oil a multi-viscosity oil prevents the 5w30 oil from thinning any more than a straight 30w at operating temp.
So the oil never really "thickens" it just starts at a 5w viscosity and only "thins" to what a 30w straight viscosity would be at the higher temps.

I submit that if you add something to oil that causes this to happen, you no-longer have oil.... ;-)

The example I posted was extreme and not many people would run their oil 21K miles in a year. Even being extreme the oil held up pretty good.
