Warm up for the winter

Aahh, I love my garage.


Took me two years to clean out the second bay of my garage and I finished right before winter. I never have parked in a garage before and man, do I love it.
 
Visit any truck-stop in New Jersey and there will be dozens of 18-wheelers, taking naps and sometimes spending the night, idling there diesels. So my few minutes every morning & night is like pissing in the ocean.

Nobody in NJ would abide by that law anyway. I see hundreds of people each week not using their head-sets for mobile phones; while driving.

Makes for a quick warm-up of the engine.... and also lets all the snow melt off my 4Runner. Gotta love a warm garage.

The only downside is that a warm garage tends to accelerate rust/corrosion from road salt.


I built my own house so my garage is super insulated and finished. It doesn't have heat but it is attached to the house, and with the insulation and drywall, the temp has yet to go below 45 degrees even when it is in the single digits outside.

I just heard on the news they will make this a primary offense to crack down because currently it is not effective and essentially unenforced. With the primary offense designation you don't have to be stopped for something else to get a ticket as with the secondary offense designation. Soon they will be able to stop and ticket just for cell phone use.

Go up to northern Canada and you will see entire parking lots of cars/trucks/rigs running for hours on end. People go for lunch or to do groceries and just leave their vehicles running. Some guys with diesels just buy an idle adjuster, turn it right down and leave the thing on 24 hours a day.

The 32 cents it might cost me to let my vehicle warm up for a couple minutes is well worth not having to scrape ice and freeze my ass off......

If it's not cold out tho.....I suppose letting it warm up is a waste

Actually you are close but still not quite right. 5w30 flows easier when it's hot. Read that info from "How Stuff Works" again.

Here is what really happens with multi-grade oils:


At a given "colder" temp, that 5w30 oil performs the same (viscosity speaking) as a straight 5w oil at that temperature.

But when you warm that same 5w30 oil to a given operating temp, the viscosity only thins out to the same as a straight 30w oil would be at that same temp. The implication here is that the straight 5w oil would be much too thin for proper protection at the higher temps and the additive that makes the oil a multi-viscosity oil prevents the 5w30 oil from thinning any more than a straight 30w at operating temp.

So the oil never really "thickens" it just starts at a 5w viscosity and only "thins" to what a 30w straight viscosity would be at the higher temps.

I never let it warm up first, but I do take it easy on the throttle. This allows everything to warm up evenly/safely. May not be right, but that's what I was taught, what I've always done, and what I'll always do.

You do realize that 30w is thicker than 5w, right?

Oil thins as it heats up. Read what you quoted.

"viscosity varies inversely with temperature"
"The higher the value, the more viscous the fluid. "

Look at the viscosity in the data sheet:

The modifiers change the viscosity as the oil heats. 5W-30 behaves like a 5W cold, 30W hot. A 30W hot is still much thinner than a 5W cold.

At 100, the viscosity is 11.3 (lower viscosity = thinner)

At 40, 64.8, much thicker.

You have it half right, some oil's viscosity can thicken when it heats up but no oil (that I know of) will flow better when it's cooler/cold.

Only when you are talking about "at the SAME temperature". And that is not what the multi-grade oil numbers mean at all.

Cold straight grade 5w oil is thicker than 30w straight grade oil at operating temperature.

A 5w30 oil flows like 5w when cold but when it is warmed to the engine operating temperature it only "thins" to the same viscosity that a straight 30 weight would be at the same high temperature. That is the whole point of multi-grade oils - you get the good flow at colder temps and they retain better high temp viscosity for better high temp lubrication.

Multi-grade oil absolutely does not get thicker when hot. Here is a direct copy from the last line of the "How Stuff Works" article that you referenced in your original post:

"Another way of looking at multi-vis oils is to think of a 20W-50 as a 20 weight oil that will not thin more than a 50 weight would when hot."

Not only can some synthetic motor oils' viscosity increase when it gets hot, some oils will end up having a higher viscosity when it has to be changed (after thousands of miles)!

Amsoil realizes they have a problem with their sythetic oil thickening and they are trying to solve it. This is caused by their synthetic additives - not from oil. The oil industry will tell you that oil "thins" when it gets hotter, it never thickens.

I submit that if you add something to oil that causes this to happen, you no-longer have oil.... ;-)

Amsoil has indeed re-formulated their 0w-30 to thicken less, but the oil was originally designed to try and maintain its viscosity through out its life. The example I posted was extreme and not many people would run their oil 21K miles in a year. Even being extreme the oil held up pretty good.

This is the Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic product data sheet and it shows the following:

SAE Grade cSt @ 40

I park in a garage overnite and whenever i am home but when i go out i get full use out of my remote start :D

I would rather pay the extra cost of gas and get into a warm vehicle.
