Water Pump

Well I replaced my idler pulleys this past week and noticed my water pump must be leaking since there was residue all over the water pump pulley and adjacent areas. My questions are what brand of pump should I look at as a replacement? How hard and long of a job is it? If I decided to take it to a shop how much is too much?

Thanx for any useful info

Which engine do you have? I am going to assume that you have the 1GR-FE (4.0L V6) as you say you can "see" the water pump itself. The job is a little easier than the V8 as you can remove the pump without having to remove the timing chain or front cover much. I would go for either a Toyota part (I believe they're made by Denso) or reputable brand such as Gates or whoever.

I don't have access to AllData or TIS at the moment so I can't give you an exact labor time. But I would assume somewhere in the neighborhood of an hour or two. Plus parts.

Thanx Blackworks very good guess on the motor it is the V6 I had just realized I forgot to mention that in my post. So you would say no more than 3 or so hours anymore than that they might just be screwing the pooch.

Just did this job recently. I used an Aisin water pump, I believe that's what Toyota uses for theirs.

Labor should be about 2 hours, make sure you use a new seal.

For removal & installation of the drivebelt, pulleys, fan clutch, associated bits and parts and then refilling and bleeding the cooling system with a short test drive afterwards to make sure everything works good? I would say 3 hours is about the max I would expect for the job to take.

SoneRick is right, its Aisin who makes the water pump, I forget which parts end up being Denso/Aisin (they're who makes our parts for the majority of everything.) If I remember right Denso does all the electrical related stuff, i.e. actuators, modules, wiring; and Aisin does stuff like engine parts, transmissions, transfer case, axles, ect.

I ordered the Aisin pump from rock auto since even my local shop can't beat them even after shipping, taxes and duties since I live in :canada:. I was quoted 163 before taxes on a Beck Arnly pump at Lordco here. Aisin from rock auto under $100 CAD with shipping. Figured it was a better quality than the other brand since I remember seeing Aisin on my other Toyota's over the years. Again thanx for the info BlackWorks and Sonerick!!

Last Summer while changing the belts and pulleys I also notice some residue around my WP. I then started to proceed the R&R of WP, halfway into the work with all them hoses and what not has to come off, I said screwed it and put every thing back and said to myself why the hell Toyota has to bury the damn WP.

I almost sell the car because of this but glad I didn't.

One thing I would highly suggest is stay away from NAPA when getting a WP.

I don't know about that. I went to autozone 3 times to get the water pump for my jeep and they kept giving me the wrong one. Napa got it right on the first try. It never leaked or failed either. I've learned that aftermarket parts are always kind of a crapshoot.

When I put a napa wp on, it took my mechanic 10 mins to get it on. He didn't like it, warned me about it, as it should just slip right on. Next day I was over heating, pump wasn't a good fit. Got one from Toyota and redid it, fit like a glove. My experience, thought id share

That's why I choose the Aisin WP vs some others out there

Wth

So I ended up taking my truck to a shop and getting the water pump done there. Get the truck back everything looks good start up the 4R and the VSC Trac and the VSC off lights are on. Shop was closed since I can't make there before they close so just drove it home. Has anyone had a problem like this? Any ideas on what they might of disconnected while doing the water pump?

If his 4Runner is an '03 or '04 they could have run the battery low by accident. You only really need to drop it down to like 11.9 volts or so for it to erase the Zero-Point Calibration data, its a funky quirk with those '03-'04's even the TIS scantool warns you about it.

So I took it back to the shop and they said they couldn't find anything wrong they had done. Now things have changed a little bit the lights were on when you started the 4R now they don't come on til I actually move the vehicle. Should I just go ahead and do the zero calibration?

Did the zero calibration and she's fixed no lights. Thanx sonerick for posting that link. I can't believe the dealer wanted to charge an hour for what took me like three minutes while waiting for my fiancee at her work.

Wtf

So I noticed the other day the smell of hot coolant and thought WTF:frusty:. I looked around under the hood and looks like the main gasket around the water pump is leaking at the very top and the coolant is pooling on the lip there. I'm wondering if I should take it back to them or just try and tighten the bolts a little more. I just feel like this place is trying to get one over on me since I supplied my own part.

I had the same problem...

Did you give them a new gasket to use? If not, they may have re-used the old one, which I found out the hard way is no-bueno. They may have also not cleaned the block well enough before bolting the pump on.

You could try tightening the bolts a little, but I'd be careful with the aluminum block and use a torque wrench maybe.

If it's leaking they should probably fix it for you though.

Yeah I'll be phoning on Monday since I don't want to deal with them today. The Aisin water pump I supplied them came with a metal and rubber gasket. Yeah I'm not to keen on tightening those bolts up I have bad memories of a aluminum bike frame I had that a buddy ruined by over tightening the bottom bracket.
