Well this classic just crapped out on me

ok guys. here is my problem. I love my 84 and it just crapped out on me

the toyota dealer says I need to replace my whole clutch system including the hyrdolics, carb, and timing chain. puts a $3.5K pricetag on it

would a 22r or 22re engine swap be more sound choice? or the supra engine swap

also, i know very little about cars so got to give it to me barney style.

lastly, here are the symptoms. I just figured id throw them out there since you are all usually better than a dealer mechanic.

engine cuts out if rpms too low.
first and 4th work intermittently. the others work no problem
no out of place odor i could detect
clutch does not seems to me to be an issue. it didnt feel loose or sticky

if you have other diagnostic questions im not thinking about. let me know and ill answer them

What happens when you said 1st and 4th intermittently? Grinding? Nothing at all? Pops out of gear?

no grinding. just pops out. well it more just doesnt engage. the shifter stays put but engine cuts out

The Carb and timing chain are not apart of the clutch system.

Could be an option. Sounds like its your transmission needs to be replaced also. How many miles on it? I say take it to a different toyota mechanic who ISNT a dealer and see what they tell you.

Too bad you arent mechanically inclined....you could buy another "classic" for the parts cheaper than their estimate!! Know any "shadetree mechanics?
A Tranny would be a simple "Remove and replace" deal actually. Try to find a parts truck or a local Toyota Nut. I know a few parts collectors but I am in Montana.

has anyone done a 22R to 22RE conversion? whats involved?

also, anyone have reccomendations on where to get a refurb 22R either in PacNorthWest or online?

@Sub where should i avoid. im still new to the mechanic world up here.

22R to RE conversion shouldn't be hard... I think all you have to change is the intake manifold, apart from wiring and the like.

Your idle and transmission problems are likely unrelated. Does it idle poorly in neutral? If so, the trans is not the problem.

As for the gearing issues, you need a new trans.

$3,500? No. If you don't have any mechanically inclined friends, I'd get estimates from independent shops in your area. If you had capable friends with a shop you could prob pull off a complete drivetrain swap with ~$6-800 or more. Depending on what you want. Springing for the EFI would be nice.

Listen to this guy and go see someone else, you can find a honest mechanic and get a few opinions before you make any hasty decisions. Someone on this site just recently told me "ANYTHING CAN BE REBUILT" Just a matter of how much elbow grease your willing to put in.
