Well... What a Scary Monday Morning....Lucky to be In one piece

I was leaving a friends home around 8am Monday morning heading to work. My friend lives way up, 3 miles deep in the Western Appalachians off an old logging road. Its wasn't more than 450 yards from the house, where it took one second of not paying full attention and boom I was hanging on (yes hanging on) for my life to prevent the truck from rolling over. The most scariest experience I have ever felt... something I'm truly hope to NEVER experience again. This is where I can truly say "my life flashed before my eyes". Below is several hundred feet of a pure drop off and not a sole in sight of that area (if I had rolled over, if would have been a long time till someone found me) Not to mention the zero cell service for 10 square miles. The truck came to a MIRACLE (I have goosebumps and tear in my eye as I write this) stop thanks to a cut down tree stump that stopped the truck from rolling over. The horrible screeching sound like in the movies when something is just about to keel over. The driver's side left and right wheel where in the air. I raced to undo my seatbelt and try and open my drivers door I almost slammed my legs trying to open the door the first time in a made panic to get out before it rolled (my thought at the time was it was going to roll over). My second attempt I opened the door as much as possible jumping to floor with the door slamming shut to the point I thought the drivers window was going to smash to pieces. I was out and in pure shock, adrenaline was pumping and thoughts racing... I took a good hour to fully acknowledge the situation. I decided if I tried to winch from the front or back it would roll over. I walked down to the nearest house to use their phone and called AAA. They came two hours later and it took them 1.5 to fully recover the vehicle from the cliff.

I'm blessed and lucky, very lucky to be in one piece and the truck too. I never really believed in angels or people overlooking or looking out for me, but that Monday morning will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN and something or someone was there to guide me. Anywhere else, truly anywhere else on the mountain my life would've been at risk.

I am truly blessed.... and grateful to be in one piece. I wanted to share this story with you (T4r) for a few reasons. The first being, live everyday like it was your last, you never know when your time will come. The second being, why didn't the Side Curtain Airbags deploy???? I read that they will release when the truck goes over a certain angle, my tuck had two wheels in the air with a 3 inch lift front and back leaning to tip over with 5 degrees or less of movement. I had them turned on. I was in 2wd at the time. I can only think the truck has to be rolling over to deploy!?

Of course, I took a picture and a video of the recovery.

The best action for recovery was a two point snatch block to two trees up in the woods. Front bumper and rear bumper and snaking it back and forth. I had to hold the brakes of his 16,000 pound truck as it was sliding.

Luckily for me I knew the tow truck driver (local) as he said none of my colleagues would of done this under AAA. He also covered a potential $300.00 recovery under my AAA membership.

Good to know you made it out OK, that's some pretty scary s..t you went trough!!!

Glad you are OK! and thanks for sharing...

I probably would have kept that stump, and had it enshrined! "Hello everyone, this is the stump that saved my life."

Uhhhh, wow brother. First off, glad you are ok. That is some seriously scary shit. I cannon imagine.

Have you driven your truck since? Everything good?

I've been there before. The most scared I've ever been in my life was when I started to roll off a cliff. Even years later I will think back about it and will start to get scared. Definitely a post traumatic stress situation.

You definitely lucked out that you weren't injured and the vehicle was recovered intact. Was there any damage?

Hey Ollie glad you are OK! Geez how far were you up the ridge?

Your side curtains did not deploy because of the angle was not great enough and the TIME it took to get to that angle was too slow.

Damn Ollie, nothing to say but thankfully God looks after old fools like me and 4Runner drivers.

Prayers of thanks that it all worked out. Scary shit!

HOLY C***!!!.... Glad you are okay and hopefully your vehicle is okay too. Did you check it over in the bat-cave yet?

I agree with j_shoe99... I would have taken the stump and carved an lucky angel or cross out of it....

Okki

yep. same here.
I know exactly how he felt.
while I wasn't quite as close to the edge as he was, mine was a cliff, with a vertical drop-off.
I sat down and just THOUGHT about the situation for atleast 30 minutes. it took me that long to work up the courage to get back in the truck. I had to drive it out...

with stock gears and 33's, I got the clutch so hot that it wouldn't even grab, and had to let it cool down several times. I finally made it out, but its something i'll never forget.

OMG !! Scary does not begin to describe that situation .

Glad you are ok. I'd still be shaking!

Wow, just saw this. Glad you are intact. Hope your drawers didn't get too soiled, I know mine would be in that situation. Always carry a spare set with me.
:peace:

Keep the shiny side up... :)

wow man.. Glad your ok! Thanks God for looking out for you.
That is crazy that your truck was recovered in one FUNCTIONAL piece. Hope you bought your friend a few beers. He is one skilled dude.

Did it scare you off from hitting the trails again?

From the looks of the video, the tow truck driver has done it many times in the past? Hooking-up to the right points and with pull carefully and slowly so not to cause any more additional harm to your T4R...

Glad that you are okay. Good morning to you!
