Went to my local Toyota dealer. And I wanted them to pull up few part # for me for my 3rd gen. They said sorry we can't. Our policy doesn't allow it. Due to the fact that if they give me # I can find it cheaper online. So stupid. Unless your buying it they said. I should of asked for a price quote. Pretty sure In the price quote they include part #

Some firms want to earn your business, others don't.

There are better choices. In my experience Camelback Toyota is one of them.

And Yelp is your friend. Nothing will change until they get pushback.

That's too bad. I have my parts guy in my contacts on my phone. If I want something I usually text him and ask if he can beat or match the price. If he can, win/win great for me, discount, local pickup, no shipping and no tax. If I need a part number for something I can usually just call or text. Looks like you got a raw deal. Sorry about that.

I think it has something to do with

toyota no longer supporting or manufacturing parts for vehicles as old as the 3rd gen 4runner.

And there right , it will be cheaper on line b/c since they no longer manufacturer the part it costs them more just to ship, handle and stock the part then the part itself is worth.

Oh and also almost every online parts outlet has the schematics for almost every part available. Ill agree that its a pain to find part numbers but in almost all the instances where ive used the schematics ive found the part numbers i wanted.

I went in to Santa Monica Toyota a few years back to get a radiator cap and thermostat for my 3rd gen. They refused unless I gave them my VIN and address/phone number. I gave them the correct VIN but a fake address and telephone number because I didn't want to get sales calls and junk mail from them.

When I went back a few days later to buy a few body molding clips, they refused to do business with someone who "defrauded them" and "wasted their time" by providing a false address and phone number.

Instead of paying $25 for the privilege of buying a single clip from them that day, I paid $0.50/clip for a bag of 25 2 days later via Amazon Prime.

1. buy part
2. when they bring it to the parts counter look at part number then immediately return it
3. ...
4. profit

(i guess maybe step 0 is check return policy)

The dealer I go to for parts typically gives me MSRP and sometimes a price that's lower than MSRP or sometimes higher(depends on the part). I work for an auto parts store and we do a lot of business with this Toyota dealership. I know they run a business so they can't give me wholesale prices but I frequently compare prices for shipped parts from Lithia or Camelback to the prices that the dealership gives me and sometimes I get a better deal from the local dealership sometimes it's a better deal from the online stores but it's never been more than $5 in price difference. Plus I usually don't have to wait a week(or a bit less) for parts when ordering from online. The longest I had to wait for a part that they ordered in was 2 days and no shipping costs.

Before my 4runner I had a 98 Nissan Pathfinder. My parts guy at dealer always helped me source parts, pricing, price check etc. Sometimes I'd buy from him sometimes not. At times he would even source procedures from tech manual and print out for my truck and wife's Sentra. Since my 4runner is so new the only thing I've really priced was TRD rims. They wanted all contact info for a quote. No one has ever told me what they told you tho.

So what was the part?

My local dealer is terrible too. Everything has to be ordered and then I have to drive down there to get it. I can order many parts from Amazon and have them in a couple of days. The local dealer's inability to stock a $6 light bulb was the reason I drove across town to purchase a new $36,000 Tacoma.

I like Partsouq.com as a website for parts.

You can input your VIN, the pictures all have hyperlinked items like the parts fiche does and while they provide part numbers.

Also if you do want to order from them, they are genuine parts and surprisingly quick on delievery (they do ship internationally, did not believe it when I ordered my Body Mounts; cheaper than even my employee discount at work. They were at my door in 3 days and a couple days later I got the customs approval paperwork saying they were shipped Fedex International!) Not trying to sell the company, but they've done right by me and have been a great reference website, so I like to pass it along. I used to use VillageToyotaParts.com but they stopped showing part numbers/prices after a while.
