WFO9 Supercharger Install and results thread

Quick update. Made a little more progress today.

Got HP tuners hooked up and longing with generic parameters and decent sampling rates. It's nice because I can also log my WB and Boost gauge with it. Just wish it supported MFG specific PIDs for Toyota. Messaged them and they said they are working on a feature for MFG specific PID extensions outside of their normal supported vehciles (GM, Ford, Dodge). I was surprised how much refinement they have done since I last used it 8 years ago.

Found there is clearly something cutting throttle from a dig. Some type of torqe managment... It shuts the throttle and kills timing.... I'm guessing this issue is much worse with gears...

However, I cleaned my MAF and the truck started running even better. I've learned how to modulate the throttle at times to avoid the torque mgt glitch and it really moves well in those conditions. Downshifts are just amazing.

It's also now ~280 g/sec of air at 5,800 which translate to 370 hp at the flywheel and I've never had that calc be that far off. If I had to guess I would say 315RWHP. It really likes 3,500 -4k up a hill. Just pulls really strong in that scenario.

MPG is horrible though.

The tune could use some refinement IMHO. Working on getting some data to Magnuson to hopefully refine a few things and possibly eliminate the TQ mgt holes. Even if that can't be done (to save the drivetrain.....) you can drive around it once you sort of get a feel for it.

Bottom line. Driving it tonight was fun....

You may have mentioned this and I just don’t remember, but how is the throttle lag (for lack of a better term) compared to stock with the SC and the tune? I’m assuming better?

I wish I could give you a crystal clear answer.. but I really can't at the moment. There are still some issue and I'm working with Magnuson to hopefully resolve them. Should have more info next week.

In summary, the ECU still does some goofy stuff where throttle and pedal don't match up, but there is so much more power that it feels satisfying most of the time.

Unfortunately, it takes time to find all the glitches built into the base calibration. Our 5th gens are filled with them.. so I have a feeling it will take some time to get around all of them.

Enough power to make me keep my 4Runner over buying a Raptor? (Still need to regear)

I'm fighting the Raptor bug too... esp with the Ranger Raptor coming out and Toyota lagging SO DAMN far behind in the power dept. However, I have a company car that I have to drive most the time. Makes it hard to justify paying that much for a Raptor when I'd hardly ever drive it. On the other hand, supercharging the 4Runner could potentially quell that a bit. I wouldn't accept anything short of OE refinement though. So hoping the glitches get worked out. Do love my Toyotas, but they need more suspension and a whole lot more go for my tastes. The suspension has an answer...

So quick question/favor. I have a shrockworks relay bracket and a bussman with all of the damn circuits already wired. It would take days to remove and reword. Can you post a picture of the coolant reservoir bracket that bolts into the fender behind the factory relay box. I am trying to figure out how creative I am going to have to be during the install.

Here’s what I have

I'm also keeping the 4Runner just to keep people annoyed.

Was reading this thread (got to much time now.......)

I understand the fuel grades but i'm curious what the people running SC/Turbo in the Baja trucks do to get by, you know? Like BJ Baladwin, Rob Cacharen, Luke Millin and etc..

They bring in their own fuel via their support trucks and have permission to truck that much fuel across.

We did the same for Trail of Missions for the helicopter (R44) which uses 91 octane, but the pilot as a force of habit has them bring in his gas separately. Since the R44 is naturally aspirated is EXTREMELY sensitive to gas quality. Given it's a single engine non turbine, you do not want anything hinky to happen to your engine when blasting at full speed 20-30' off the deck.

Here ya go. It can really go anywhere... Just needs to be high enough... The bracket bolts to the fender and to the master cyl bracket...

IDK, it's not clear cut. I think I would buy a raptor if it met all my needs and I felt good about it. I just can't get into them.. but if I lived near open desert... where I could put it into it's element... I might feel very different. But I might wait and see if they came out with something better. Unlike a 4r.. each generation makes the older ones seem like junk. With the 4r you just have the same mediocre tech for 20 years.

I can't think that a SC on the t4r would quell a want for a Raptor. These are apples and oranges. I have both and use both for different purposes.

I have been following this thread because like most I love the t4r but would like a bit more power. Yes, the suspension and a few other upgrades were added to suit my purpose, but that's not the t4r fault. I have also done a $hit ton of work to my Raptor to make it suit my needs. Frankly the t4r needed less work and there is no t4r mod tax on parts, unlike the Raptor.

Just my .02

What does you Raptor weight? Everyone underestimated "the little rally cars" in the early 2000s, but it's about power to weight for those who are function over form. I'd LOVE the 2nd gen Raptor power to weight ratio and similar suspension in a 4runner. Would be ideal package for myself and many others. Otherwise there wouldn't be the market for the SC kits in these vehicles. Want power for on pavement and appropriate suspension for off... both if you were actually desert racing but then you're back to the wrong platform depending.

It's good, endearing tech, but yes, very dated.

Any more word on fine tuning?

Got a message Yesterday saying progress was made and that a new calibration should be coming soon, but I think the tune guy is out next week, so it will probably be after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Thanks again big time for all the time you've put into not only your SC build but relaying all this info to us, really, thank you.

... and you can tell that there are a lot of serious eyes on this thread hah. I can sense a good number of us are ready to buy but just want some "proof in the pudding".
