what an unbelievable difference! - kappa 3.5 dash speakers

I have a set of 3.5 and 6x9 Boston Acoustic speakers - both 4 ohm - that I would like to use. I am assuming from this thread that the 3.5s might work in the dash (if they fit), but the 6x9 will not work in the door...

Is this correct?

Does anyone know what the stock speakers (8 speakers) are rated at? 2 ohm, 4 ohm or something else....

For the doors you will need to make some adapters. Plastic cutting boards work good.

I am going to assume the speakers are all 4 ohm. That is pretty standard.

Thanks Ryan... I pick up a new TE next week -- crazy, I do not even have the car, but know that the stock Toyota speakers are just plain cheap.

I have a few adapters from TacoTunes that I hope will work, at least on the front doors. If this works, I will do the same on the rear door and worry about the tailgate last.

What concerned me is that one person tried to swap out the door speakers and ended up in a world of hurt. The four wire combo is different than the last Toyota I did this to, so hopefully, I will not hose up the electrical system and end up getting a pro to do it... I would like to save the money and buy better components.

^i wouldn't say world of hurt just more $ and time than expected. I tried boston 3ways as well, which off the factory sr5 deck werent anything to write home about. After much trial/error the 6.5 imo is the perfect door speaker. Good luck.

Thanks -- good advice. I have two-way 6x9s - I will see if these work, and if not, go the JL route on the doors....

After seeing the paper cones and dime sized magnet on the stock speakers from an FJ, I would be surprised if the TEs are any better. Likely the same manuf.

^As you already know, JL is just 1 of the many after market that you can chose from, IMO anything you put in, as long as there is a low range of bass produced, in the front doors will work well. I tried a 6x9 and though it was loud, the bass output of the 6.5" was far better. The sound deadening makes a huge difference. W/ an amp I ran the front doors for a couple of days, the left w/ deadening, the right w/out, and there was a night and day difference when fading/balancing between the two. While you have the door apart it's worth doing it that's something your interested in.

BTW -- have you seen any pictures of how to remove the door panel -- it sounds a little more difficult than the FJ -- the FJ panels are really simple. I am hoping for the same on the 4R.

Did you put the amp under the seat or in the dash? just curious.

Infinity speakers rock. Don't know if they still do or not, but Chrysler used to use Infinity for its premium sound upgrade. I have them in my 04 RAM and had them in the 04 Jeep Liberty I traded for the 4R. Maybe the only 2 vehicles I've owned that I never found the need to modify the head unit and/or speakers. I even installed a set of Infinity speakers when I put a stereo on my golf cart.

I started with the left side (Boston 3 1/2 in) no problem... The right side was a very tight fit with the air vent... huge improvement and worth the effort. Need time for the doors... I tried, but had a hard time getting the window switches pulled off the door panel --- I did not want to break the plastic connectors.. Can you pull the door panel without removing window switch and disconnect once the panel is removed?

Do NOT try to pry the window control panel off without the door panel off as you'll break the switch.It's very very expensive!

It comes off after you take the door panel off and the window control panels are held on by a bunch of screws.

To get the door panel off.....First, take the front black triangle piece off by pulling straight towards you.To get the door panel off there are 3 hidden screws behind plastic doors and then give a good yank at the bottom to release the plastic christmas tree clips and then up to clear the top ledge. Then disconnect the wiring harnesses and the door lock/release cables to get the panel off. It's the same basic principle as almost all door panels since caveman days!

Hey man- just installed the kappas into my 2011 LE. I used the crossover dongle on the speakers and tucked them under the dash . My wire colors differed from those listed on this thread. I cut off the factory harness on both sides of the truck and wired the 2 wires on each side directly to the kappa crossover. My wiring: FL+green FL-blue FR+pink FR-yellow

OK... put the drivers side Kappa in this morning. Stripped off the factory plug... then stripped the wires and wired them as shown above. I put the wires directly into the crossover. Now my "Party Mode" doesn't work? Any help would be appreciated. The Party mode will be useful for Tailgating and would still like to keep that function. Do I need to get rid of the crossover? I have to still do the passenger side. Any help would be great! Chris

Yeh, I'm hoping Harper7, reclov, or someone else chimes in here because I have a set of these speakers that I just bought and plan on installing. Don't want to lose my party mode either. I'm wondering if the head unit has a built in crossover unit which would make the speaker crossovers "not needed". Hmm.
