There is enough room inside the speaker slot to just slide it under the dashboard. Surprisingly it's pretty roomy down there.

I ordered those speakers. Question, are these the same ones the OP installed. Also, I haven't installed speakers in a car in 15 years. What are the things attached by the wires to the speakers? Looks like the terminal but ive never seen speakers like that. Where do they go in the install?

I need some further advice please. My Infininty kappa 3.5's arrived and I have not yet installed them but also thought I would want to replace the front door speakers but can not really decide what I should go with. Since the kappa 3.5 are 2 ohm, making them very efficient, I want to maintain 2 ohm in the doors as well so I thought that I'd search for something by Infinity that would be a good match. Well, the Crutchfield site lists 2 possibilities when I search for what will fit th 2010 4runner but both these speakers are 5.25" and not the 6" plus that I think are in there now. Also these Infinities have some components that go with the pair that I'm not even sure I would know what to do with (extra tweeters?). They are the Kappa 50.9cs and also the Infinity Reference 5030cs. Here is a link and they are pricey. If there is some other good front door speakers to use I've got your attention. Thanks.

The Youtube video posted by Toyko sells me further but it does not say what the thingies attached to the wire are. What are they? I'm thinking about getting them for an older 4Runner that uses a 4" speaker in the dash.

Those are crossovers. They basically protect the speaker from sound frequencies that it cannot play. You just tuck it into the dash under the speaker when you install them, or get fancy with some 3M tape so it doesn't rattle. :beer:

Here's what I did

I replaced my dash speakers with the Kappa's. Front doors with Polk dxi 6x9's and lift gate with Polk dxi 6.5's. All four doors are now completely covered with sound deadening material (cut the blue clear plastic on door and stuck the material throughout the entire inside door) and a full piece of dynamat per door. I have the party mode on which basically makes it a 6 speaker system. The difference is amazing from the stock speakers. I'm sure the quietness helps too as the road noise is far better.

I'm not saying I'm a pro or anything but this makes me more than happy and I won't be going the amp route now.

Curious - do you have the JBL HU or the non-premium HU? I am thinking about doing the same thing, but debating on the rear doors vs the lift gate and to amp or not to amp... I do think the sound would be much better if I added an amp, but it is pretty good without. Not sure if it is worth spending $300+ for an amp for a slight increase in sound quality... But, changing out the speakers is money well spent.

I have the standard (non JBL). I also think it sounds pretty good with the new speakers. Running in party mode with the six new speakers works great. I originally had the 6.5 in the rear doors but then moved them to the lift gate and I think it sounds better that way. So I have new dash, front doors and lift gate...stock in rear doors. No amp...stock deck

I just put these Infinity Kappas into my TE with JBL. Did not have to trim at all but the passenger side took a little finagling to make work.

These speakers put out MUCH clearer highs then the stock speakers, they sound great. I wouldn't say it is a night and day difference from stock JBL but a great improvement and worth the $50 and 30min to install em'.

I finally put my Kappa's in the dash today as well. Seems like this is getting to be one of the most popular mods here on this forum. I remember in one of the previous posts someone did some trimming on the passanger side which really means cutting into what I think is the heat duct. I did not want to do this, so instead I trimmed the plastic back of the speaker grill (round part that goes over the speaker) and did it with a grinding wheel and it worked great. sits perfectly flush with the dash. I really can't believe the difference, shall we say vast improvement in sound compared to those little paper cones. Now I think I'll review the 6x9's that some here have been installing in the doors. Can't wait to do those next.

I think I am going to replace the speakers as a first step and decide on the amp later...

I do not need a car stereo that rattles all the windows in the neighborhood, just something that is clear sounding... I feel like I am 70% there..

I'm honestly not sure on the 6.5's. I know the installer made some brackets for the 6x9's in front but thought the 6.5's installed with the brackets that came with the speakers.

Depends how big the magnet is. The passenger side is pretty tight as it is.

You could it them if you modified the covers and made brackets to hold the speakers up higher.

You are correct! I wouldnt reccommend doing any trimming, everything that is below the speakers is useful. :cheers:

I’m thinking about using spade connectors for my speakers and was wondering what type of wire connectors, if any, have you guys used or recommend?

I was going to "do it correctly" and use spade connectors, however the terminals on the Inifnity crossover are just the set screw type, not really the type that work with spade connectors.

Really I should have used some ferrules (Panduit Corp. FSD80-12-D Single Wire Ferrule), but I didnt have the crimper at home and I was lazy.

For the Infinity crossovers specifically, I think you'll be fine doing the ol' twist and shuff, as long as you make sure you have both wires locked down under the set screw. Give em a good tug after you tighten the screw.
